## What it does

The skill runs a seven-phase pipeline with gates. It first triages the input into greenfield or referenced work: if existing resources are involved, they get inventoried and referenced rather than recreated, and deployment stays additive.

Phases then run in order: insight extraction, best-practice research, resource research, plan generation. Phase 5 needs explicit user approval. Phase 6 is a hardened self-verifying gate — the generated IaC must pass `az bicep build` or `terraform validate` with zero errors and a `checkov` scan with no unresolved high/critical findings, and the skill has to show the command output. Phase 7 waits for a risk-acknowledged deploy confirmation.

Artifacts land under `<project-root>/`: `.azure/insights.json`, `.azure/infrastructure-plan.json` with statuses `draft`→`approved`→`deployed`, and code in `infra/main.bicep` plus modules or `infra/main.tf`. The skill leans on MCP tools such as `insights_get`, `get_azure_bestpractices_get`, `wellarchitectedframework_serviceguide_get` and `bicepschema_get`. If an MCP tool is unavailable, it retries once, then falls back to reference files. For app-centric work the authors point to `azure-prepare`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-enterprise-infra-planner -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-enterprise-infra-planner
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-enterprise-infra-planner/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- architect a landing zone from a workload description
- break a hub-spoke network into subnets, firewalls and private endpoints
- plan a multi-region topology with failover
- generate Bicep or Terraform for subscription-scope deployment
- wire a new workload into existing infrastructure without recreating resources

## Example prompts
- Plan Azure infrastructure for a workload across two regions with resilient storage
- Design a hub-spoke network with VNets, firewalls and private endpoints
- Generate Bicep for a subscription-scope deployment from this plan

# Azure Enterprise Infra Planner

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when user wants to:
- Plan enterprise Azure infrastructure from a workload or architecture description
- Architect a landing zone, hub-spoke network, or multi-region topology
- Design networking infrastructure: VNets, subnets, firewalls, private endpoints, VPN gateways
- Plan identity, RBAC, and compliance-driven infrastructure
- Generate Bicep or Terraform for subscription-scope or multi-resource-group deployments
- Plan disaster recovery, failover, or cross-region high-availability topologies

## Workflow (Start Here)

Follow the step-by-step instructions in [workflow.md](references/workflow.md) to execute the 7 phases of infrastructure planning and provisioning.

## Architecture

The skill runs a **7-phase, gated pipeline**. Input is triaged into one of two flows:

- **Greenfield** — only new requirements; run the phases straight through.
- **Referenced (brownfield)** — the user supplies something that already exists (a live resource /
  resource group / subscription, IaC or an infra plan, or a requirements doc). The same phases run, plus
  [referenced-workload.md](references/referenced-workload.md): existing resources are inventoried and
