## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through systematic troubleshooting of Azure production failures. It checks symptoms and Resource Health before querying logs or metrics. When MCP tools are present, the agent triggers AppLens for root-cause analysis and queries Azure Monitor using KQL.

Workflows route specific resource issues into dedicated guides. Incidents involving AKS clusters, VM connectivity through SSH or RDP, and messaging SDK errors in Service Bus or Event Hubs follow specialized documents. Container Apps and Function Apps troubleshooting runs inside this main skill.

When live cloud access is restricted, the skill forces an evidence-only mode. The agent works purely with supplied log files and timeline metrics, avoiding any external API calls or CLI commands.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-diagnostics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-diagnostics/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-diagnostics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-diagnostics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-diagnostics/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose high CPU and crash loops in App Service
- fix SSH and RDP connection timeouts on Azure VMs
- resolve pod pending and CoreDNS failures in AKS
- investigate dead-letter queues and lost message locks in Service Bus

## Example prompts
- Troubleshoot high CPU and slow responses on App Service `api-prod`
- Diagnose why our AKS cluster cannot connect to CoreDNS
- Investigate lost message locks and AMQP connection drops in Service Bus

# Azure Diagnostics

> **AUTHORITATIVE GUIDANCE — MANDATORY COMPLIANCE**
>
> This document is the **official source** for debugging and troubleshooting Azure production issues. Follow these instructions to diagnose and resolve common Azure service problems systematically.

## Triggers

Activate this skill when user wants to:
- Debug or troubleshoot production issues
- Diagnose errors in Azure services
- Analyze application logs or metrics
- Fix image pull, cold start, or health probe issues
- Investigate why Azure resources are failing
- Find root cause of application errors
- Troubleshoot App Service issues (high CPU, deployment failures, crashes, slow responses, TLS/custom domains)
- Respond to prompts like "troubleshoot app service", "app service high CPU", or "app service deployment failure"
- Troubleshoot Azure Function Apps (invocation failures, timeouts, binding errors)
- Find the App Insights or Log Analytics workspace linked to a Function App
- Troubleshoot AKS clusters, nodes, pods, ingress, or Kubernetes networking issues
- Troubleshoot Azure VM connectivity issues (RDP/SSH failures, port 3389/22 timeouts, NSG or firewall blocking, credential resets)
- Troubleshoot Azure Messaging SDK issues (Event Hubs, Service Bus connection failures, AMQP errors, message lock issues)
- Root-cause a symptom that looks like a healthy-runtime-but-wrong-destination problem (e.g., telemetry/messages stop flowing to the expected resource after a config change) — invoke this skill for the matrix even when MCP tools could answer the surface question alone

## Rules

1. Start with systematic diagnosis flow
2. Use supplied evidence first. If the user requests evidence-only analysis or prohibits live Azure access, do not query or modify Azure. Diagnose from the supplied logs, metrics, and timeline; identify assumptions and provide optional verification steps.
3. Use AppLens (MCP) for AI-powered diagnostics when available
4. Check resource health before deep-diving into logs
5. Select appropriate troubleshooting guide based on service type
6. Document findings and attempted remediation steps
