## What it does

This skill combines an indexed category guide with dynamic documentation retrieval. It covers security settings, Managed DevOps Pools, quota limits, server topologies, and diagnostics for network or permission errors.

Your agent needs network access to retrieve full articles. It prefers `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` and falls back to `fetch_webpage` with Markdown formatting. Without these tools or internet connectivity, remote documentation lookups will fail.

It explicitly excludes task tracking, repositories, build pipelines, and test plans. Microsoft provides dedicated skills for those areas, such as `azure-pipelines` and `azure-boards`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure DevOps, Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-devops -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-devops/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-devops -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-devops -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-devops
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-devops -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-devops
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-devops -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-devops/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose Managed DevOps Pools and MCP server issues
- check organization limits and quota constraints
- configure security permissions and audit logs
- troubleshoot project collection upgrade failures on Azure DevOps Server
- optimize OData queries for Power BI analytics

## Example prompts
- Help me troubleshoot diagnostic logs for Managed DevOps Pools
- How do I fix a project collection upgrade failure in Azure DevOps Server?
- Show best practices for optimizing permissions in a large Azure DevOps org

# Azure DevOps Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure DevOps. Covers troubleshooting, best practices, decision making, architecture & design patterns, limits & quotas, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
