## What it does

\`azure-deploy` runs deployment work for an application that already has its project and infrastructure prepared. It reads `.azure/deployment-plan.md`, checks for the `Validated` status and validation proof, loads the matching recipe, then executes commands such as `azd up`, `azd deploy`, `terraform apply`, or `az deployment`.

The skill includes a pre-deployment checklist, error handling, an RBAC check for Container Apps with ACR, and post-deployment steps for SQL managed identity and EF Core migrations when applicable. It verifies endpoint access and live Azure roles, then reports endpoints as `https://` URLs. Deployment cannot proceed without a validated `.azure/deployment-plan.md`.

MCP tools can list subscriptions and resource groups, run AZD commands, and inspect role assignments. The skill is available for Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-deploy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-deploy/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-deploy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-deploy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-deploy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- deploy an already-prepared application to Azure
- run `azd up` or `azd deploy`
- apply prepared infrastructure with `terraform apply`
- check Azure RBAC after deployment
- verify that deployed endpoints are reachable

## Example prompts
- Deploy the prepared application with `azd up`, then verify the result.
- Run `azd deploy` to publish the latest changes to the existing Azure deployment.
- Apply the prepared Terraform setup with `terraform apply`, then check the endpoints and Azure roles.

# Azure Deploy

> **AUTHORITATIVE GUIDANCE — MANDATORY COMPLIANCE**
>
> **PREREQUISITE**: The **azure-validate** skill **MUST** be invoked and completed with status `Validated` BEFORE executing this skill.

> **⛔ STOP — PREREQUISITE CHECK REQUIRED**
> Before proceeding, verify BOTH prerequisites are met:
>
> 1. **azure-prepare** was invoked and completed → `.azure/deployment-plan.md` exists
> 2. **azure-validate** was invoked and passed → plan status = `Validated`
>
> If EITHER is missing, **STOP IMMEDIATELY**:
> - No plan? → Invoke **azure-prepare** skill first
> - Status not `Validated`? → Invoke **azure-validate** skill first
>
> **⛔ DO NOT MANUALLY UPDATE THE PLAN STATUS**
>
> You are **FORBIDDEN** from changing the plan status to `Validated` yourself. Only the **azure-validate** skill is authorized to set this status after running actual validation checks. If you update the status without running validation, deployments will fail.
>
> **DO NOT ASSUME** the app is ready. **DO NOT SKIP** validation to save time. Skipping steps causes deployment failures. The complete workflow ensures success:
>
> `azure-prepare` → `azure-validate` → `azure-deploy`

## Triggers

Activate this skill when user wants to:
- Execute deployment of an already-prepared application (azure.yaml and infra/ exist)
- Push updates to an existing Azure deployment
- Run `azd up`, `azd deploy`, or `az deployment` on a prepared project
- Ship already-built code to production
- Deploy an application that already includes API Management (APIM) gateway infrastructure

> **Scope**: This skill executes deployments. It does not create applications, generate infrastructure code, or scaffold projects. For those tasks, use **azure-prepare**.

> **APIM / AI Gateway**: Use this skill to deploy applications whose APIM/AI gateway infrastructure was already created during **azure-prepare**. For creating or changing APIM resources, see [APIM deployment guide](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/api-management/get-started-create-service-instance). For AI governance policies, invoke **azure-aigateway** skill.

## Rules

1. Run after azure-prepare and azure-validate
2. `.azure/deployment-plan.md` must exist with status `Validated`
3. **Pre-deploy checklist required** — [Pre-Deploy Checklist](references/pre-deploy-checklist.md)
