## What it does

This skill covers Azure Tables SDK for Java. It shows client setup with a connection string, shared key, SAS token, or DefaultAzureCredential, then walks through table management and entity CRUD. It also includes OData filters, selecting properties, and batch transactions.

Entities use partition and row keys. Updates can merge selected properties or replace the whole entity. Batch transactions have a constraint: every entity in the batch must share one Partition Key. The DefaultAzureCredential example applies to Storage only, so it does not cover Cosmos DB Table API authentication.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-data-tables-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-data-tables-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-data-tables-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-data-tables-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-data-tables-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure an Azure Tables client with an available authentication method
- create a table and obtain its client
- insert, retrieve, update, or delete an entity by its keys
- filter table results with OData and select properties
- submit entity operations as a batch transaction

## Example prompts
- Show me how to connect to Azure Tables with a connection string and add an entity using `partitionKey` and `rowKey`.
- Write a table query with an OData filter on `PartitionKey` and select `Name` and `Price`.
- Create a batch transaction for several entities while meeting the Partition Key requirement.

# Azure Tables SDK for Java

Build table storage applications using the Azure Tables SDK for Java. Works with both Azure Table Storage and Cosmos DB Table API.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
  <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
  <artifactId>azure-data-tables</artifactId>
  <version>12.6.0-beta.1</version>
</dependency>
```

## Client Creation

### With Connection String

```java
import com.azure.data.tables.TableServiceClient;
import com.azure.data.tables.TableServiceClientBuilder;
import com.azure.data.tables.TableClient;
TableServiceClient serviceClient = new TableServiceClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<your-connection-string>")
    .buildClient();
```

### With Shared Key

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.AzureNamedKeyCredential;
AzureNamedKeyCredential credential = new AzureNamedKeyCredential(
    "<account-name>",
    "<account-key>");
TableServiceClient serviceClient = new TableServiceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint("<your-table-account-url>")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
```

### With SAS Token

```java
TableServiceClient serviceClient = new TableServiceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint("<your-table-account-url>")
    .sasToken("<sas-token>")
    .buildClient();
```

### With DefaultAzureCredential (Storage only)

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
TableServiceClient serviceClient = new TableServiceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint("<your-table-account-url>")
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
```

## Key Concepts

- **TableServiceClient**: Manage tables (create, list, delete)
- **TableClient**: Manage entities within a table (CRUD)
- **Partition Key**: Groups entities for efficient queries
- **Row Key**: Unique identifier within a partition
- **Entity**: A row with up to 252 properties (1MB Storage, 2MB Cosmos)

## Core Patterns

### Create Table

```java
// Create table (throws if exists)
TableClient tableClient = serviceClient.createTable("mytable");
// Create if not exists (no exception)
TableClient tableClient = serviceClient.createTableIfNotExists("mytable");
```

### Get Table Client

```java
// From service client
TableClient tableClient = serviceClient.getTableClient("mytable");
// Direct construction
TableClient tableClient = new TableClientBuilder()
    .connectionString("<connection-string>")
