# azure-cosmos-ts

A skill covering the Azure Cosmos DB JavaScript/TypeScript SDK: document CRUD, queries, bulk operations. Useful when the agent writes data-access code.

## What it does

The skill documents the `@azure/cosmos` data plane SDK — document operations, queries, stored procedures. Account, database and container provisioning over ARM is out of scope; that belongs to `@azure/arm-cosmosdb`.

TypeScript samples walk through building a `CosmosClient`, signing in with `DefaultAzureCredential` or `ManagedIdentityCredential`, plus key and connection-string auth. From there: read, replace, upsert, delete, and partial updates with `patch`. Separate sections cover parameterized queries, paging with `continuationToken`, cross-partition queries, and `executeBulkOperations`.

Node.js 20.0.0 or newer is required, along with the `@azure/cosmos` and `@azure/identity` packages. In production, `DefaultAzureCredential` needs `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` set — skip it and Entra auth will not resolve there. Key-based access stays available as a fallback, though the samples treat it as the lesser option.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-cosmos-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-cosmos-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-cosmos-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-cosmos-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write CRUD calls against Cosmos DB documents
- build a parameterized SQL query instead of string concatenation
- page through a large result set with continuationToken
- run a mixed batch of operations in one call
- update a single field without replacing the whole document

## Example prompts
- Write TypeScript that reads a Cosmos DB document by id and partition key
- Show a parameterized container query filtered by price
- How do I run bulk operations with executeBulkOperations?

# @azure/cosmos (TypeScript/JavaScript)

Data plane SDK for Azure Cosmos DB NoSQL API operations — CRUD on documents, queries, bulk operations.

> **⚠️ Data vs Management Plane**
> - **This SDK (@azure/cosmos)**: CRUD operations on documents, queries, stored procedures
> - **Management SDK (@azure/arm-cosmosdb)**: Create accounts, databases, containers via ARM

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/cosmos @azure/identity
```

**Current Version**: 4.9.0
**Node.js**: >= 20.0.0

## Environment Variables

```bash
COSMOS_ENDPOINT=https://<account>.documents.azure.com:443/
COSMOS_DATABASE=<database-name>
COSMOS_CONTAINER=<container-name>
# For key-based auth only (prefer AAD)
COSMOS_KEY=<account-key>
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential (Recommended)

```typescript
import { CosmosClient } from "@azure/cosmos";
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const client = new CosmosClient({
  endpoint: process.env.COSMOS_ENDPOINT!,
  aadCredentials: credential,
});
```

### Key-Based Authentication

```typescript
import { CosmosClient } from "@azure/cosmos";
// Option 1: Endpoint + Key
const client = new CosmosClient({
  endpoint: process.env.COSMOS_ENDPOINT!,
  key: process.env.COSMOS_KEY!,
});
// Option 2: Connection String
const client = new CosmosClient(process.env.COSMOS_CONNECTION_STRING!);
```

## Resource Hierarchy

```
CosmosClient
└── Database
    └── Container
        ├── Items (documents)
        ├── Scripts (stored procedures, triggers, UDFs)
        └── Conflicts
```

## Core Operations

### Database & Container Setup

```typescript
const { database } = await client.databases.createIfNotExists({
  id: "my-database",
});
const { container } = await database.containers.createIfNotExists({
  id: "my-container",
  partitionKey: { paths: ["/partitionKey"] },
});
```

### Create Document

```typescript
interface Product {
  id: string;
  partitionKey: string;
  name: string;
  price: number;
}
const item: Product = {
  id: "product-1",
  partitionKey: "electronics",
  name: "Laptop",
  price: 999.99,
};
