## What it does

The skill covers Azure Container Registry through the `azure-containerregistry` package. It shows how to list repositories, inspect and change repository properties, work with tags and manifests, and download manifests or artifact blobs. It also includes a cleanup pattern for removing untagged manifests that are older than a cutoff.

Examples use `ContainerRegistryClient` with `DefaultAzureCredential`, including synchronous and asynchronous clients. Client objects and credentials are placed in context managers so their resources are released. Set `AZURE_CONTAINERREGISTRY_ENDPOINT` before connecting; production use of `DefaultAzureCredential` also uses `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`. Without the endpoint variable, the client cannot connect.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure, Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-containerregistry-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-containerregistry-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-containerregistry-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-containerregistry-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- list repositories in Azure Container Registry
- inspect image, manifest, or tag properties
- block writes or deletes on a repository
- download a manifest or artifact blob
- remove old untagged manifests

## Example prompts
- Write Python code that lists repositories with `ContainerRegistryClient` and `DefaultAzureCredential`.
- Inspect `my-image` and show its repository, manifest, and tag properties.
- Create a cleanup script that removes untagged manifests past a cutoff and writes a downloaded layer to `layer.tar.gz`.

# Azure Container Registry SDK for Python

Manage container images, artifacts, and repositories in Azure Container Registry.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-containerregistry
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_CONTAINERREGISTRY_ENDPOINT=https://<registry-name>.azurecr.io  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

### Entra ID (Recommended)

```python
import os
from azure.containerregistry import ContainerRegistryClient
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with ContainerRegistryClient(
    endpoint=os.environ["AZURE_CONTAINERREGISTRY_ENDPOINT"],
    credential=credential
) as client:
    # Use client here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
```

### Anonymous Access (Public Registry)

```python
from azure.containerregistry import ContainerRegistryClient
with ContainerRegistryClient(
    endpoint="https://mcr.microsoft.com",
    credential=None,
    audience="https://mcr.microsoft.com"
) as client:
    # Use client here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
```

## List Repositories

```python
with ContainerRegistryClient(endpoint, DefaultAzureCredential()) as client:
    for repository in client.list_repository_names():
        print(repository)
```

## Repository Operations

### Get Repository Properties

```python
