## What it does

The skill gives the agent a reference on designing Azure solutions. It covers reference architectures, solution ideas, design patterns, technology choices, architecture styles, best practices, anti-patterns and migration guides. Everything sits in a category index with line ranges, so the agent reads only the section it needs instead of the whole file.

Network access is required. Documentation is fetched through `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with the query string `from=learn-agent-skill`, and `fetch_webpage` works as a fallback. Without a network or either tool, only the local quick-reference content is left. When `mcp_microsoftdocs` is missing, the skill points you to the install guide in the MicrosoftDocs/mcp repository.

The frontmatter carries a generation date. Once it is more than three months old, the skill suggests pulling the latest version from the repository. That is worth checking before a large project, because Azure services move fast and the reference is a snapshot of that date.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-architecture -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-architecture/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-architecture -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-architecture -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-architecture
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-architecture -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-architecture
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-architecture -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-architecture/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a reference architecture for a RAG or GenAI workload
- break a mainframe or SAP migration into stages
- choose a resiliency pattern for a multiregion app
- spot the anti-pattern slowing down a cloud workload
- map AWS or Google Cloud services to Azure equivalents

## Example prompts
- Propose a reference architecture for RAG on Azure with HA/DR in mind
- Map our AWS services to Azure and tell me what changes in the migration
- Review our AKS cluster for anti-patterns and show how to fix them

# Azure Architecture Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for designing Azure solutions using Azure Architecture. Covers reference architectures, solution ideas, design patterns, technology choices, architecture styles, best practices, anti-patterns, example workloads, and migration guides. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
