## What it does

The skill covers the `azure-appconfiguration` Python SDK. It shows how to fetch a single setting by key, set one with an environment label, delete it, and list settings filtered by key prefix or label. Feature flags get their own section: they live under a `.appconfig.featureflag/<name>` key, and the value is JSON with an `enabled` field and a list of conditions. Snapshots are there too — `begin_create_snapshot` freezes a set of settings at a point in time.

Auth runs on `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure.identity`. Locally it picks up Azure CLI or VS Code, in Azure it uses managed identity, and no code changes are needed. For production the skill advises setting `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` so the credential chain stays on production-safe sources. Connection strings and account keys are avoided: they skip Entra audit and rotation. `AZURE_APPCONFIGURATION_ENDPOINT` is required.

Every client goes into a context manager — `with` for sync, `async with` for async, and the async `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure.identity.aio` needs its own `async with`. Do not mix sync and async clients in one call path. Install the `azure-appconfiguration` package with pip.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-appconfiguration-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-appconfiguration-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-appconfiguration-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- read a setting by key and environment label
- toggle a feature flag without redeploying
- capture the current configuration as a snapshot
- lock a setting against accidental edits
- pull every key under a given prefix

## Example prompts
- show me how to get the app:settings:message setting with the production label
- create a beta-feature flag and turn it on
- take a v1-snapshot of app:* keys with the production label

# Azure App Configuration SDK for Python

Centralized configuration management with feature flags and dynamic settings.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-appconfiguration
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_APPCONFIGURATION_ENDPOINT=https://<name>.azconfig.io  # Required for Entra ID auth
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
import os
from azure.appconfiguration import AzureAppConfigurationClient
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with AzureAppConfigurationClient(
    base_url=os.environ["AZURE_APPCONFIGURATION_ENDPOINT"],
    credential=credential
) as client:
    # Use client here (see following sections for operations)
    ...
```

## Configuration Settings

### Get Setting

```python
setting = client.get_configuration_setting(key="app:settings:message")
print(f"{setting.key} = {setting.value}")
```

### Get with Label

```python
# Labels allow environment-specific values
setting = client.get_configuration_setting(
    key="app:settings:message",
````
