## What it does

This skill guides your coding agent when implementing the `com.azure:azure-data-appconfiguration` package. It supplies concrete Java patterns for building synchronous and asynchronous configuration clients, connecting via connection strings or Entra ID tokens.

It covers key store operations: adding entries with `addConfigurationSetting`, setting values, conditional retrieval with status 304 handling, and concurrency checks via ETags. You also get selectors to filter configuration keys by pattern and deployment labels.

Entra ID authentication strictly requires `AZURE_APPCONFIG_ENDPOINT`, plus `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS` in production. Without an active Azure configuration store, calls fail immediately at runtime.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-appconfiguration-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-appconfiguration-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-appconfiguration-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Instantiate a Java App Configuration client using Entra ID or connection strings
- Guard against concurrent writes using ETag conditional updates
- Query configuration settings filtered by label and key prefix
- Manage application settings and feature flags in Java services

## Example prompts
- Generate Java code to initialize a ConfigurationClient using Entra ID credentials
- Show how to perform a conditional get with ETag handling 304 responses in Java
- Write a method to list Azure App Configuration settings filtered by environment label

# Azure App Configuration SDK for Java

Client library for Azure App Configuration, a managed service for centralizing application configurations.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-data-appconfiguration</artifactId>
    <version>1.8.0</version>
</dependency>
```

Or use Azure SDK BOM:

```xml
<dependencyManagement>
    <dependencies>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
            <artifactId>azure-sdk-bom</artifactId>
            <version>{bom_version}</version>
            <type>pom</type>
            <scope>import</scope>
        </dependency>
    </dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
        <artifactId>azure-data-appconfiguration</artifactId>
    </dependency>
</dependencies>
```

## Prerequisites

- Azure App Configuration store
- Connection string or Entra ID credentials

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_APPCONFIG_CONNECTION_STRING=Endpoint=https://<store>.azconfig.io;Id=<id>;Secret=<secret>  # Alternative to Entra ID auth
AZURE_APPCONFIG_ENDPOINT=https://<store>.azconfig.io  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Client Creation

### With Connection String

```java
import com.azure.data.appconfiguration.ConfigurationClient;
import com.azure.data.appconfiguration.ConfigurationClientBuilder;
ConfigurationClient configClient = new ConfigurationClientBuilder()
    .connectionString(System.getenv("AZURE_APPCONFIG_CONNECTION_STRING"))
    .buildClient();
```

### Async Client

```java
import com.azure.data.appconfiguration.ConfigurationAsyncClient;
ConfigurationAsyncClient asyncClient = new ConfigurationClientBuilder()
    .connectionString(connectionString)
    .buildAsyncClient();
```

### With Entra ID (Recommended)

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
ConfigurationClient configClient = new ConfigurationClientBuilder()
    .credential(credential)
