# azure-app-service

Hands the agent a reference for Azure App Service: plans, VNet integration, managed identity, slots, WebJobs. Useful when work touches config or deployment.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a local category index for Azure App Service and a way to pull current docs over the network. Topics are split into troubleshooting, best practices, tier and plan decisions, architecture, limits and quotas, security, configuration, integrations, and deployment. The agent walks the index, then reads a line range or a linked file such as `security.md`.

Live pages come through `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with the query string `from=learn-agent-skill`; without that MCP server the fallback is `fetch_webpage` with `accept=text/markdown`. Network access is required. Offline you keep only the local quick-reference content, which is half the point. When `metadata.generated_at` is more than three months old, the skill suggests pulling a newer copy from the repository.

Scope is narrow on purpose: Azure Functions, Container Apps, Static Web Apps and Spring Apps are out, each with its own skill. In a mixed stack the agent will not answer Functions questions from this reference.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-app-service -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-app-service/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-app-service -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-app-service -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills azure-app-service
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-app-service -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --path skills/azure-app-service
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills --skill azure-app-service -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/skills/azure-app-service/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a tier and plan that fit the workload
- wire managed identity for storage and SQL access
- move VNet integration from gateway to regional
- prepare an app for inbound and outbound IP changes
- choose between App Service Environment v3 and multitenant

## Example prompts
- Check the azure-app-service skill for what managed identity auth needs in my web app
- Walk me through deployment slots so a swap does not break prod
- Compare ASE v3 and a multitenant plan for our App Service

# Azure App Service Skill

This skill provides expert guidance for Azure App Service. Covers troubleshooting, best practices, decision making, architecture & design patterns, limits & quotas, security, configuration, integrations & coding patterns, and deployment. It combines local quick-reference content with remote documentation fetching capabilities.

## How to Use This Skill

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: Use the **Category Index** below to locate relevant sections. For categories with line ranges (e.g., `L35-L120`), use `read_file` with the specified lines. For categories with file links (e.g., `[security.md](security.md)`), use `read_file` on the linked reference file

> **IMPORTANT for Agent**: If `metadata.generated_at` is more than 3 months old, suggest the user pull the latest version from the repository. If `mcp_microsoftdocs` tools are not available, suggest the user install it: [Installation Guide](https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/mcp/blob/main/README.md)

This skill requires **network access** to fetch documentation content:
- **Preferred**: Use `mcp_microsoftdocs:microsoft_docs_fetch` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill`. Returns Markdown.
- **Fallback**: Use `fetch_webpage` with query string `from=learn-agent-skill&accept=text/markdown`. Returns Markdown.
