# azure-app-onboard

Takes a business idea or existing codebase to a running Azure deployment: picks services, estimates cost, writes IaC.

## What it does

The skill runs a four-phase pipeline: Discover, Architect, Scaffold, Deploy. It starts by creating or resuming a session, verifying Azure CLI auth, and resolving the subscription. Then it scans your code for deploy readiness, confirms the stack and services, and writes an architecture plan. Ten numbered steps, and skipping them is not an option.

Along the way it reads its own references: `references/pipeline-rules.md` for approval gates and phase lifecycle, plus `prepare/SKILL.md`, `scaffold/SKILL.md` and `deploy/SKILL.md`. Session artifacts land in `.copilot-azure/sessions/{id}/` — `context.json`, `prepare-plan.json`, `scaffold-manifest.json`, `deploy-result.json`. Two approval gates stop the run: one before any file is generated, one before deployment. Nothing moves until you answer.

You need Azure CLI auth and a subscription. If an MCP server is unavailable, the skill skips the affected checks and adds a disclaimer to `costEstimate.assumptions[]` and to every approval gate. Missing RBAC gets reported with the required role and an `az role assignment` command. Worth checking your access upfront, because a blocked pipeline halts mid-run. For trimming existing spend there is `cost-optimization` from the optional `azure-cost` plugin, and for a plain `azd up` there is `azure-deploy` — this skill covers a different path.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-app-onboard -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-app-onboard/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-app-onboard
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-app-onboard
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-app-onboard/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick Azure services for code you already have
- get a cost estimate before provisioning anything
- move an existing app to Azure with minimal changes
- generate IaC tailored to your app instead of a template
- check whether your code is ready to deploy

## Example prompts
- move my app to Azure and estimate the cost
- which Azure services do I need for this project
- check if my code is ready to deploy to Azure

description: "End-to-end orchestrator: from a business idea, app idea, or existing app to running Azure deployment with cost estimates and pre-deploy approval. Analyzes your app, auto-detects the right Azure services, scaffolds infrastructure code, and deploys — tailored to your app, not a template. Handles moving existing apps to Azure without rewriting or with minimal changes. WHEN: bring your app to Azure, plan my app, cost to run, is my code ready to deploy, deploy my app to the cloud, deploy all my services, what Azure services do I need, plan my Azure deployment, deploy my new app to Azure, one-click deploy, I have an app and want it on Azure, migrate my app to Azure, help me get started, build an app, no code yet, starter project. DO NOT USE FOR: use azd for deployment(use azure-deploy), optimizing existing costs (use cost-optimization), code readiness checks only (use azure-app-onboard-prereq)."

# Azure App Onboard

> ⛔ **Every repo goes through the full pipeline (Steps 1–10). No exceptions.** Do not skip steps, refuse, or short-circuit based on what you recognize. Follow the Workflow table below sequentially — read each step's references before acting.

## Quick Reference

| Property | Value |
|----------|-------|
| Best for | Developers who know what to build but not which Azure services to use |
| Inputs | Business idea or existing codebase, budget/scale preferences (optional) |
| Outputs | Architecture plan, cost estimate, IaC files, deployed Azure resources |
| Phases | Discover → Architect → Scaffold → Deploy (self-contained, no external skill calls) |

## When to Use This Skill

- Deploy existing code without knowing which Azure services to use
- Check if your existing code is ready to deploy to Azure
- Move an existing app to Azure without rewriting or with minimal changes
- Get cost estimates before committing to infrastructure
- Understand architecture decisions and rejected alternatives
- Get answers to Azure architecture or service selection questions (e.g., "What database should I use?")
- Get guided Azure onboarding without prior experience

## When NOT to Use

| Scenario | Use Instead |
|----------|-------------|
| Run `azd up` or execute an existing deployment | `azure-deploy` |
| Optimize existing Azure spend | `cost-optimization` from the optional `azure-cost` plugin |
| Generate Bicep/Terraform for a known architecture | `azure-prepare` |
| Validate infrastructure or run preflight checks | `azure-validate` |
| Troubleshoot a running Azure deployment | `azure-diagnostics` |
| Deploy to or manage AKS/Kubernetes directly | `azure-kubernetes` |
| Look up or list existing Azure resources | `azure-resource-lookup` |

If `cost-optimization` is unavailable, explain that it is provided by the
