## What it does

The skill guides you through connecting AI backends to Azure API Management and applying gateway policies. These include semantic caching, token limits, content filtering, load balancing, and token metrics. It also covers rate limiting for MCP tools and sending a test request to an AI endpoint with `curl`.

Reference material includes policy examples, configuration patterns, and troubleshooting guidance. Azure CLI (`az`) is required for configuration and testing. If APIM still needs to be deployed, the instructions point to the `azure-prepare` skill for that step.

Use it to govern model access through APIM. A token limit can trigger a 429 response; the troubleshooting guidance suggests raising `tokens-per-minute` or adding load balancing.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-aigateway -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-aigateway/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-aigateway
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-aigateway
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-aigateway/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- connect an Azure OpenAI backend to APIM
- set token limits to control model costs
- cache semantically similar model requests
- rate-limit requests to an MCP tool
- test an AI endpoint through the gateway

## Example prompts
- Configure an Azure OpenAI backend in Azure API Management and grant access with managed identity.
- Add semantic caching, token limits, and usage metrics to the gateway.
- Test the AI endpoint through the gateway with `curl`.

# Azure AI Gateway

Configure Azure API Management (APIM) as an AI Gateway for governing AI models, MCP tools, and agents.

> **To deploy APIM**, use the **azure-prepare** skill. See [APIM deployment guide](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/api-management/get-started-create-service-instance).

## Get Gateway Details

```bash
# Get gateway URL
az apim show --name <apim-name> --resource-group <rg> --query "gatewayUrl" -o tsv
# List backends (AI models)
az apim backend list --service-name <apim-name> --resource-group <rg> \
  --query "[].{id:name, url:url}" -o table
# Get subscription key
az apim subscription keys list \
  --service-name <apim-name> --resource-group <rg> --subscription-id <sub-id>
```

---

## Test AI Endpoint

```bash
GATEWAY_URL=$(az apim show --name <apim-name> --resource-group <rg> --query "gatewayUrl" -o tsv)
curl -X POST "${GATEWAY_URL}/openai/deployments/<deployment>/chat/completions?api-version=2024-02-01" \
## Common Tasks
### Add AI Backend
See [references/patterns.md](references/patterns.md#pattern-1-add-ai-model-backend) for full steps.
```bash
# Discover AI resources
az cognitiveservices account list --query "[?kind=='OpenAI']" -o table

# Create backend
az apim backend create --service-name <apim> --resource-group <rg> \
  --backend-id openai-backend --protocol http --url "https://<aoai>.openai.azure.com/openai"

# Grant access (managed identity)
az role assignment create --assignee <apim-principal-id> \
