## What it does

This skill provides conventions and implementation patterns for the `@azure/ai-voicelive` SDK package. It covers session initialization through `VoiceLiveClient`, real-time audio streaming, server-side voice activity detection settings, and tool calling definitions.

Authentication uses `@azure/identity` with `DefaultAzureCredential` or an explicit `AzureKeyCredential`. Server environments require Node.js 20 or newer, while browser builds support current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Connecting fails immediately if `AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT` is missing from the environment.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-voicelive-ts -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-voicelive-ts
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-typescript/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-ts/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- implement bidirectional WebSocket streaming for voice AI
- configure real-time audio sessions with `gpt-4o-mini-realtime-preview`
- set up server-side voice activity detection and audio playback
- handle Entra ID or API key authentication for Azure AI

## Example prompts
- Create a voice assistant in TypeScript using `VoiceLiveClient` and Azure AI.
- Configure a real-time session with `pcm16` audio format and server VAD settings.
- Set up event subscriptions for streaming text and audio deltas from `VoiceLiveSession`.

# @azure/ai-voicelive (JavaScript/TypeScript)

Real-time voice AI SDK for building bidirectional voice assistants with Azure AI in Node.js and browser environments.

## Installation

```bash
npm install @azure/ai-voicelive @azure/identity
# TypeScript users
npm install @types/node
```

**Current Version**: 1.0.0-beta.3

**Supported Environments**:
- Node.js LTS versions (20+)
- Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com
# Optional: API key if not using Entra ID
AZURE_VOICELIVE_API_KEY=<your-api-key>
# Optional: Logging
AZURE_LOG_LEVEL=info
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential (Recommended)

```typescript
import { DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential } from "@azure/identity";
import { VoiceLiveClient } from "@azure/ai-voicelive";
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-node-latest#credential-classes
// const credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
const endpoint = "https://your-resource.cognitiveservices.azure.com";
const client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, credential);
```

### API Key

```typescript
import { AzureKeyCredential } from "@azure/core-auth";
import { VoiceLiveClient } from "@azure/ai-voicelive";
const endpoint = "https://your-resource.cognitiveservices.azure.com";
const credential = new AzureKeyCredential("your-api-key");
const client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, credential);
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
VoiceLiveClient
└── VoiceLiveSession (WebSocket connection)
    ├── updateSession()      → Configure session options
    ├── subscribe()          → Event handlers (Azure SDK pattern)
    ├── sendAudio()          → Stream audio input
    ├── addConversationItem() → Add messages/function outputs
    └── sendEvent()          → Send raw protocol events
```

## Quick Start

```typescript
import { DefaultAzureCredential } from "@azure/identity";
import { VoiceLiveClient } from "@azure/ai-voicelive";
const credential = new DefaultAzureCredential({requiredEnvVars: ["AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS"]});
const endpoint = process.env.AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT!;
// Create client and start session
const client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, credential);
const session = await client.startSession("gpt-4o-mini-realtime-preview");
