## What it does

The skill covers the Java SDK clients for opening a VoiceLive session, setting voice and transcription options, sending audio, and responding to server events. Its examples include speech-start and speech-stop events, assistant audio output, and turn detection settings.

Audio input must be signed 16-bit PCM, little-endian, mono, at 24000 Hz. The Maven dependency is `com.azure:azure-ai-voicelive`; access requires `AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT`. Key-based authentication also uses `AZURE_VOICELIVE_API_KEY`, while production use of `DefaultAzureCredential` requires `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`. Choose the credential path before wiring the client, since the environment requirements differ.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-voicelive-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-voicelive-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add the Azure AI VoiceLive SDK dependency to a Java project
- open a WebSocket session for a voice assistant
- stream PCM audio and receive spoken responses
- handle speech and response-completion events
- configure voice activity detection and transcription

## Example prompts
- Show me how to add Azure AI VoiceLive to this Java project.
- Create a WebSocket session example that sends PCM16 audio and handles server events.
- Configure voice activity detection and transcription for incoming audio with VoiceLive.

# Azure AI VoiceLive SDK for Java

Real-time, bidirectional voice conversations with AI assistants using WebSocket technology.

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-ai-voicelive</artifactId>
    <version>1.0.0-beta.2</version>
</dependency>
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.openai.azure.com/ # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_VOICELIVE_API_KEY=<your-api-key> # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### API Key

```java
import com.azure.ai.voicelive.VoiceLiveAsyncClient;
import com.azure.ai.voicelive.VoiceLiveClientBuilder;
import com.azure.core.credential.AzureKeyCredential;
VoiceLiveAsyncClient client = new VoiceLiveClientBuilder()
    .endpoint(System.getenv("AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT"))
    .credential(new AzureKeyCredential(System.getenv("AZURE_VOICELIVE_API_KEY")))
    .buildAsyncClient();
```

### DefaultAzureCredential (Recommended)

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
VoiceLiveAsyncClient client = new VoiceLiveClientBuilder()
    .endpoint(System.getenv("AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT"))
    .credential(credential)
    .buildAsyncClient();
```

## Key Concepts

| Concept | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| `VoiceLiveAsyncClient` | Main entry point for voice sessions |
| `VoiceLiveSessionAsyncClient` | Active WebSocket connection for streaming |
| `VoiceLiveSessionOptions` | Configuration for session behavior |

### Audio Requirements

- **Sample Rate**: 24kHz (24000 Hz)
- **Bit Depth**: 16-bit PCM
- **Channels**: Mono (1 channel)
- **Format**: Signed PCM, little-endian

## Core Workflow

### 1. Start Session

```java
import reactor.core.publisher.Mono;
client.startSession("gpt-4o-realtime-preview")
    .flatMap(session -> {
        System.out.println("Session started");
        // Subscribe to events
        session.receiveEvents()
            .subscribe(
                event -> System.out.println("Event: " + event.getType()),
                error -> System.err.println("Error: " + error.getMessage())
            );
        return Mono.just(session);
    })
    .block();
```

### 2. Configure Session Options
