## What it does

The skill hands your agent a reference for the `Azure.AI.VoiceLive` package: the `VoiceLiveClient`, a `VoiceLiveSession` over WebSocket, `VoiceLiveSessionOptions` for configuration, `SessionUpdate` event handling and function calling. Code samples are C# — starting a session, sending user messages, reading audio and text deltas.

You need an Azure AI resource with an endpoint in `AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT`, a deployed model name in `AZURE_VOICELIVE_MODEL`, and the `Cognitive Services User` role when authenticating through Entra. An API key is only required for `AzureKeyCredential` auth. The audio samples use `NAudio` for capture and playback.

Pick a model that is actually deployed on your resource, and set the voice with `AzureStandardVoice` or `AzureCustomVoice`. If your project already wraps WebSocket transport and audio streaming itself, the skill will overlap with that code — worth keeping just the function-calling part.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-voicelive-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up a voice assistant session in C#
- tune end-of-turn detection with VAD
- read audio and text from one event stream
- define a function and feed its result back into the conversation
- pick a model and voice for a deployed Azure resource

## Example prompts
- Help me configure a VoiceLiveSession for a .NET voice assistant
- Add a get_current_weather function to the session and handle its call
- How do I handle SessionUpdateResponseAudioDelta and play it with NAudio?

# Azure.AI.VoiceLive (.NET)

Real-time voice AI SDK for building bidirectional voice assistants with Azure AI.

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.AI.VoiceLive
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
dotnet add package NAudio                    # For audio capture/playback
```

**Current Versions**: Stable v1.0.0, Preview v1.1.0-beta.1

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.services.ai.azure.com/  # Required: Voice Live endpoint
AZURE_VOICELIVE_MODEL=gpt-4o-realtime-preview  # Required: model deployment name
AZURE_VOICELIVE_VOICE=en-US-AvaNeural  # Optional: Voice Live voice name
AZURE_VOICELIVE_API_KEY=<your-api-key>  # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.AI.VoiceLive;
Uri endpoint = new Uri("https://your-resource.cognitiveservices.azure.com");
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
VoiceLiveClient client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, credential);
```

**Required Role**: `Cognitive Services User` (assign in Azure Portal → Access control)

### API Key

```csharp
Uri endpoint = new Uri("https://your-resource.cognitiveservices.azure.com");
AzureKeyCredential credential = new AzureKeyCredential("your-api-key");
VoiceLiveClient client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, credential);
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
VoiceLiveClient
└── VoiceLiveSession (WebSocket connection)
    ├── ConfigureSessionAsync()
    ├── GetUpdatesAsync() → SessionUpdate events
    ├── AddItemAsync() → UserMessageItem, FunctionCallOutputItem
    ├── SendAudioAsync()
    └── StartResponseAsync()
```

## Core Workflow

### 1. Start Session and Configure

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.AI.VoiceLive;
var endpoint = new Uri(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_VOICELIVE_ENDPOINT"));
var client = new VoiceLiveClient(endpoint, new DefaultAzureCredential());
var model = "gpt-4o-mini-realtime-preview";
// Start session
