## What it does

The skill covers Azure AI Vision Image Analysis SDK calls for images supplied by URL or file. With `ImageAnalysisClient`, examples request captions, tags, detected objects, text, people, and smart crops. Dense captions can describe separate image regions and include their bounding boxes.

Connection examples use `VISION_ENDPOINT` with Azure credentials. `DefaultAzureCredential` is the primary path; an existing key-based deployment can use `AzureKeyCredential` with `VISION_KEY`. The examples manage clients and credentials with context managers. The client needs a configured `VISION_ENDPOINT` to reach the service.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a caption for an image URL
- extract text from an image with OCR
- detect objects and return their bounding boxes
- retrieve image tags and region captions
- request crops at selected aspect ratios

## Example prompts
- Show me how to get captions and tags for an image URL with Azure AI Vision.
- Write Python OCR code for `image.jpg` using the Azure AI Vision SDK.
- Add object detection and smart cropping with `ImageAnalysisClient`.

# Azure AI Vision Image Analysis SDK for Python

Client library for Azure AI Vision 4.0 image analysis including captions, tags, objects, OCR, and more.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-ai-vision-imageanalysis
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
VISION_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
VISION_KEY=<your-api-key>  # Only required for the legacy API-key auth path below
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
import os
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.ai.vision.imageanalysis import ImageAnalysisClient
from azure.ai.vision.imageanalysis.models import VisualFeatures
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with ImageAnalysisClient(
    endpoint=os.environ["VISION_ENDPOINT"],
    credential=credential,
) as client:
    result = client.analyze_from_url(
        image_url="https://aka.ms/azsdk/image-analysis/sample.jpg",
        visual_features=[VisualFeatures.CAPTION],
    )
```

### Legacy: API Key (existing keyed deployments)

New code should use `DefaultAzureCredential` above. Use `AzureKeyCredential` only if you have an existing keyed deployment that hasn't been migrated to Entra ID yet — for example, regulated environments still completing their Entra rollout.

```python
import os
from azure.core.credentials import AzureKeyCredential
from azure.ai.vision.imageanalysis import ImageAnalysisClient
