# azure-ai-translation-text-py

## What it does

The skill hands your agent working snippets for the `azure-ai-translation-text` library. You get single-target and multi-target translation, an explicit source language, detected language with a confidence score, transliteration between scripts, and dictionary entries that carry part of speech plus usage examples.

Authentication comes in two flavours. The recommended one is `DefaultAzureCredential` from `azure.identity` — same code locally and in Azure; in production you set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod`. The other is a key: `AzureKeyCredential` plus a region when you talk to the global endpoint. Watch the endpoint rule here: token auth only works against a custom subdomain such as `https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com`, so a global endpoint keeps you on the key path.

Wrap the client in a context manager — `with` for sync, `async with` for async — so sockets and the token cache close on schedule. Install with `pip install azure-ai-translation-text`; endpoint and key come from environment variables.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-translation-text-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-translation-text-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-translation-text-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- translate a batch of strings into several languages in one call
- detect the language of incoming text and read the confidence score
- convert Latin text into Japanese script
- look up alternate word translations with part-of-speech tags
- authenticate against Azure without hardcoding keys

## Example prompts
- Translate these strings into Spanish and French with `TextTranslationClient`
- Detect the language of this text and show the confidence score
- Switch the translation client to `DefaultAzureCredential` instead of a key

# Azure AI Text Translation SDK for Python

Client library for Azure AI Translator text translation service for real-time text translation, transliteration, and language operations.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-ai-translation-text
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_TRANSLATOR_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com  # Required for Entra ID auth (must be a custom subdomain endpoint)
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
# Only required for the legacy API-key auth path below:
AZURE_TRANSLATOR_KEY=<your-api-key>
AZURE_TRANSLATOR_REGION=<your-region>  # e.g., eastus, westus2; required when authenticating with a key against the global endpoint
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
import os
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.ai.translation.text import TextTranslationClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with TextTranslationClient(
    endpoint=os.environ["AZURE_TRANSLATOR_ENDPOINT"],
    credential=credential,
) as client:
