## What it does

The skill hands your agent ready-made patterns for the `azure-ai-textanalytics` library. It covers `TextAnalyticsClient` calls for sentiment analysis with aspect-based opinion mining, named entity recognition, key phrase extraction, language detection, PII detection with redaction, and healthcare entity analysis through `begin_analyze_healthcare_entities`. Batch work goes through `begin_analyze_actions`, which runs several analyses over the same documents in one pass.

Setup starts with `pip install azure-ai-textanalytics`. For auth the skill pushes `DefaultAzureCredential`, which works locally through Azure CLI or VS Code and in Azure through managed identity without code changes. In production, `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` narrows the credential chain. The older `AzureKeyCredential` path stays for keyed deployments that have not moved to Entra ID yet. `AZURE_LANGUAGE_ENDPOINT` is required either way.

Wrap the client in a context manager — `with TextAnalyticsClient(...) as client:` for sync, `async with` for async. That releases HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches deterministically. Skip it in a long-running process and connections linger, which is worth checking before you ship.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-textanalytics-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-textanalytics-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-textanalytics-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- score sentiment across reviews and pull out aspect-level opinions
- find and redact personal data in text
- detect the language of incoming messages
- extract key phrases from documents
- parse clinical notes and link entities to a reference source

## Example prompts
- Run sentiment analysis on these reviews with azure-ai-textanalytics and show aspect opinions
- Detect and redact PII in this text using TextAnalyticsClient
- Detect the language of each document and print the ISO code with confidence

# Azure AI Text Analytics SDK for Python

Client library for Azure AI Language service NLP capabilities including sentiment, entities, key phrases, and more.

## Installation

```bash
pip install azure-ai-textanalytics
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_LANGUAGE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com  # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
AZURE_LANGUAGE_KEY=<your-api-key>  # Only required for the legacy API-key auth path below
```

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

```python
import os
from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential
from azure.ai.textanalytics import TextAnalyticsClient
# Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
credential = DefaultAzureCredential(require_envvar=True)
# Or use a specific credential directly in production:
# See https://learn.microsoft.com/python/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-python#credential-classes
# credential = ManagedIdentityCredential()
with TextAnalyticsClient(
    endpoint=os.environ["AZURE_LANGUAGE_ENDPOINT"],
    credential=credential,
) as client:
    languages = client.detect_language(["Hello, world!"])
```
