## What it does

The skill centers on `Azure.AI.OpenAI` and the `AzureOpenAIClient` entry point. It covers clients for chat, embeddings, images, audio, and assistants, with examples for async calls, streaming output, multi-turn conversations, and schema-constrained JSON responses.

The material also shows API-key authentication, `DefaultAzureCredential`, reasoning-model requests, and Azure AI Search as a RAG data source. Add `Azure.AI.OpenAI` to the project; the `OpenAI` package is used when direct OpenAI compatibility is needed. The Azure client requires `AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT`, while the model deployment is supplied through `AZURE_OPENAI_DEPLOYMENT_NAME`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-openai-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-openai-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-openai-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- connect Azure OpenAI to a .NET project
- create a chat client for a model deployment
- generate embeddings or an image
- stream chat output to the console
- return model data through a JSON Schema

## Example prompts
- Set up Azure OpenAI in my .NET project with `AzureOpenAIClient`.
- Show an async `ChatClient` example that streams the response.
- Configure a schema-based JSON reply for a GPT-4 request.

# Azure.AI.OpenAI (.NET)

Client library for Azure OpenAI Service providing access to OpenAI models including GPT-4, GPT-4o, embeddings, DALL-E, and Whisper.

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.AI.OpenAI
# For OpenAI (non-Azure) compatibility
dotnet add package OpenAI
```

**Current Version**: 2.1.0 (stable)

## Environment Variables

```bash
AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT=https://<resource-name>.openai.azure.com  # Required: Azure OpenAI endpoint
AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY=<api-key>  # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
AZURE_OPENAI_DEPLOYMENT_NAME=gpt-4o-mini  # Required: model deployment name
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Client Hierarchy

```
AzureOpenAIClient (top-level)
├── GetChatClient(deploymentName)      → ChatClient
├── GetEmbeddingClient(deploymentName) → EmbeddingClient
├── GetImageClient(deploymentName)     → ImageClient
├── GetAudioClient(deploymentName)     → AudioClient
└── GetAssistantClient()               → AssistantClient
```

## Authentication

### API Key Authentication

```csharp
using Azure;
using Azure.AI.OpenAI;
AzureOpenAIClient client = new(
    new Uri(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT")!),
    new AzureKeyCredential(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY")!));
```

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.AI.OpenAI;
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
AzureOpenAIClient client = new(
    new Uri(Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT")!),
    credential);
```

### Using OpenAI SDK Directly with Azure

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using OpenAI;
using OpenAI.Chat;
using System.ClientModel.Primitives;
#pragma warning disable OPENAI001
BearerTokenPolicy tokenPolicy = new(
    new DefaultAzureCredential(),
    "https://cognitiveservices.azure.com/.default");
ChatClient client = new(
    model: "gpt-4o-mini",
    authenticationPolicy: tokenPolicy,
    options: new OpenAIClientOptions()
    {
        Endpoint = new Uri("https://YOUR-RESOURCE.openai.azure.com/openai/v1")
    });
```

## Chat Completions

### Basic Chat

```csharp
using Azure.AI.OpenAI;
using OpenAI.Chat;
AzureOpenAIClient azureClient = new(
    new Uri(endpoint),
    new DefaultAzureCredential());
ChatClient chatClient = azureClient.GetChatClient("gpt-4o-mini");
ChatCompletion completion = chatClient.CompleteChat(
[
    new SystemChatMessage("You are a helpful assistant."),
    new UserChatMessage("What is Azure OpenAI?")
]);
