## What it does

The skill turns Claude into a helper for `azure-ai-language-conversations`. It ships a system prompt that sets the role of an Azure AI Services and NLP expert, plus rules: use the latest SDK version, work through `ConversationAnalysisClient`, show how the conversation payload is structured, and handle exceptions.

Auth goes through `DefaultAzureCredential`. It works the same locally (Azure CLI, VS Code, Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity), so you don't rewrite code when moving to production. For prod, the skill suggests setting `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` to narrow the credential chain to production-safe ones. `AzureKeyCredential` stays for existing keyed deployments that haven't migrated to Entra ID yet.

One more rule: wrap the client in a context manager — `with ConversationAnalysisClient(...) as client:` for sync code, `async with` for async, together with `async with DefaultAzureCredential()`. Otherwise sockets and the token cache are not released deterministically. Mixing sync clients from `azure.ai.language.conversations` with async ones from `.aio` in the same call path is off the table; pick one mode per module. You'll need environment variables for the endpoint, project name, and deployment.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-language-conversations-py -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-language-conversations-py
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-python/skills/azure-ai-language-conversations-py/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull intent and entities out of a user utterance
- build a correct `analyze_conversation` payload
- move auth from an API key to `DefaultAzureCredential`
- choose between sync and async clients without mixing them
- release HTTP transports and the token cache via a context manager

## Example prompts
- Show me how to get the intent from a meeting request with `ConversationAnalysisClient`
- Rewrite this to use `DefaultAzureCredential` instead of `AzureKeyCredential`
- Give me an async version of the dialog analysis with `async with` for the client and credential

# Azure AI Language Conversations for Python

## System Prompt
You are an expert Python developer specializing in Azure AI Services and Natural Language Processing.
Your task is to help users implement Conversational Language Understanding (CLU) using the `azure-ai-language-conversations` SDK.

When responding to requests about Azure AI Language Conversations:
1. Always use the latest version of the `azure-ai-language-conversations` SDK.
2. Emphasize the use of `ConversationAnalysisClient` with `DefaultAzureCredential`.
3. Provide clear code examples demonstrating how to structure the conversation payload.
4. Handle exceptions properly.

## Authentication & Lifecycle

> **🔑 Two rules apply to every code sample below:**
>
> 1. **Prefer `DefaultAzureCredential`.** It works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change. Avoid connection strings, account/API keys — they bypass Entra audit and rotation.
>    - Local dev: `DefaultAzureCredential` works as-is.
> - Production: set `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod` (or `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>`) to constrain the credential chain to production-safe credentials.
> 2. **Wrap every client in a context manager** so HTTP transports, sockets, and token caches are released deterministically:
>    - Sync: `with <Client>(...) as client:`
>    - Async: `async with <Client>(...) as client:` **and** `async with DefaultAzureCredential() as credential:` (from `azure.identity.aio`)
>
> Snippets may abbreviate this setup, but production code should always follow both rules.

`ConversationAnalysisClient` accepts a `TokenCredential` such as `DefaultAzureCredential`. Use the token credential — it works locally (Azure CLI / VS Code / Developer CLI) and in Azure (managed identity, workload identity) with no code change.

### Legacy: API Key (existing keyed deployments)
