## What it does

The skill covers the Java SDK `com.azure:azure-ai-documentintelligence`: choosing a prebuilt model, sending a PDF or document URL for analysis, and reading the result. Available model examples handle text, page layout, receipts, invoices, and identity documents.

Its guidance includes synchronous, asynchronous, and administration clients, with authentication through `DefaultAzureCredential` or an API key. The service endpoint must be set in `DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT`. When `DefaultAzureCredential` is used in production, `AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS` is also required; without the endpoint, the client cannot connect to the Azure resource.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-formrecognizer-java -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-formrecognizer-java
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-java/skills/azure-ai-formrecognizer-java/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- extract text and lines from a PDF in Java
- read tables and page structure from a document
- retrieve invoice fields or receipt data
- choose a prebuilt model for an identity document
- configure an Azure AI Document Intelligence Java client

## Example prompts
- Write Java code to extract text and lines from `document.pdf` with Azure AI Document Intelligence.
- Analyze an invoice URL with the prebuilt invoice model and return its fields.
- Show how to configure `DefaultAzureCredential` for the Java client and identify the required environment variables.

# Azure AI Document Intelligence SDK for Java

> **Rebranding:** Azure AI Form Recognizer is now **Azure AI Document Intelligence**.
> New projects should use `com.azure:azure-ai-documentintelligence`. The legacy `azure-ai-formrecognizer` package targets API version 2023-07-31 only.
> See [Migration Guide](https://github.com/Azure/azure-sdk-for-java/blob/main/sdk/documentintelligence/azure-ai-documentintelligence/MIGRATION_GUIDE.md).

## Before Implementation

Search `microsoft-docs` MCP for current API patterns:
- Query: `"azure-ai-documentintelligence Java SDK"`
- Verify: Parameters match installed SDK version (latest GA: 1.0.7)

## Installation

```xml
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-ai-documentintelligence</artifactId>
    <version>1.0.0</version>
</dependency>
<!-- For DefaultAzureCredential -->
<dependency>
    <groupId>com.azure</groupId>
    <artifactId>azure-identity</artifactId>
    <version>1.14.2</version>
</dependency>
```

## Environment Variables

```bash
DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource>.cognitiveservices.azure.com/ # Required for all auth methods
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### DefaultAzureCredential (Recommended)

```java
import com.azure.ai.documentintelligence.DocumentIntelligenceClient;
import com.azure.ai.documentintelligence.DocumentIntelligenceClientBuilder;
import com.azure.core.credential.TokenCredential;
import com.azure.identity.AzureIdentityEnvVars;
import com.azure.identity.DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder;
import com.azure.identity.ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder;
TokenCredential credential = new DefaultAzureCredentialBuilder()
    .requireEnvVars(AzureIdentityEnvVars.AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS)
    .build();
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/java/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-java-stable#credential-classes
// TokenCredential credential = new ManagedIdentityCredentialBuilder().build();
DocumentIntelligenceClient client = new DocumentIntelligenceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint(System.getenv("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT"))
    .credential(credential)
    .buildClient();
```

### API Key

```java
import com.azure.core.credential.AzureKeyCredential;
DocumentIntelligenceClient client = new DocumentIntelligenceClientBuilder()
    .endpoint(System.getenv("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT"))
    .credential(new AzureKeyCredential(System.getenv("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_KEY")))
    .buildClient();
```

### Administration Client

```java
import com.azure.ai.documentintelligence.DocumentIntelligenceAdministrationClient;
import com.azure.ai.documentintelligence.DocumentIntelligenceAdministrationClientBuilder;
