## What it does

This skill carries working C# samples for the `Azure.AI.DocumentIntelligence` package. Ask the agent for document parsing code and it reaches for these: reading an invoice with `prebuilt-invoice`, pulling tables and structure with `prebuilt-layout`, extracting receipt fields, or building a custom model. The samples are what the agent adapts to your project.

Two clients cover the ground. `DocumentIntelligenceClient` handles analysis and classification; `DocumentIntelligenceAdministrationClient` builds and manages custom models and classifiers. Auth runs either through `DefaultAzureCredential` from `Azure.Identity` or a key wrapped in `AzureKeyCredential`. Entra ID needs a custom subdomain such as `https://<resource-name>.cognitiveservices.azure.com/` — a regional endpoint will fail here.

Set `DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT` before anything else; it is required. `DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_API_KEY` matters only when you authenticate by key, and training a custom model wants a blob container SAS URL. Packages come in with `dotnet add package Azure.AI.DocumentIntelligence` and `dotnet add package Azure.Identity`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Azure

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add microsoft/skills --skill azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install microsoft/skills azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/microsoft/skills --path .github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/microsoft/skills/tree/HEAD/.github/plugins/azure-sdk-dotnet/skills/azure-ai-document-intelligence-dotnet/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write C# code that pulls vendor and total fields from invoices
- extract tables and layout from a PDF
- read merchant, total and date off a receipt
- train a custom model on your own forms
- wire up Azure auth with `DefaultAzureCredential`

## Example prompts
- Write C# that analyzes an invoice with `prebuilt-invoice` and prints the vendor name with confidence
- Show me how to extract tables from a PDF using `prebuilt-layout`
- Build a custom model `my-custom-model` from a blob container

# Azure.AI.DocumentIntelligence (.NET)

Extract text, tables, and structured data from documents using prebuilt and custom models.

## Installation

```bash
dotnet add package Azure.AI.DocumentIntelligence
dotnet add package Azure.Identity
```

**Current Version**: v1.0.0 (GA)

## Environment Variables

```bash
DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT=https://<resource-name>.cognitiveservices.azure.com/  # Required: Document Intelligence endpoint
DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_API_KEY=<your-api-key>  # Only required for AzureKeyCredential auth
BLOB_CONTAINER_SAS_URL=https://<storage>.blob.core.windows.net/<container>?<sas-token>  # Optional: blob container SAS URL for training data
AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod  # Required only if DefaultAzureCredential is used in production
```

## Authentication

### Microsoft Entra Token Credential

```csharp
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.AI.DocumentIntelligence;
string endpoint = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT");
// Local dev: DefaultAzureCredential. Production: set AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=prod or AZURE_TOKEN_CREDENTIALS=<specific_credential>
var credential = new DefaultAzureCredential(
    DefaultAzureCredential.DefaultEnvironmentVariableName
);
// Or use a specific credential directly in production:
// See https://learn.microsoft.com/dotnet/api/overview/azure/identity-readme?view=azure-dotnet#credential-classes
// var credential = new ManagedIdentityCredential();
var client = new DocumentIntelligenceClient(new Uri(endpoint), credential);
```

> **Note**: Entra ID requires a **custom subdomain** (e.g., `https://<resource-name>.cognitiveservices.azure.com/`), not a regional endpoint.

### API Key

```csharp
string endpoint = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_ENDPOINT");
string apiKey = Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("DOCUMENT_INTELLIGENCE_API_KEY");
var client = new DocumentIntelligenceClient(new Uri(endpoint), new AzureKeyCredential(apiKey));
```

## Client Types

|--------|---------|
| `DocumentIntelligenceClient` | Analyze documents, classify documents |
