## What it does

The skill walks through building an Axum service: routers with nested routes, extractors like `Path`, `Query`, `Json` and `State`, and shared state held in `Arc<AppState>`. A separate section maps a domain error to an HTTP status and JSON body through `IntoResponse`.

Middleware comes as `tower-http` layers: tracing, timeouts, CORS. Shutdown handling covers SIGINT and SIGTERM so in-flight requests can finish. Router tests use `ServiceExt`.

Examples pin `axum` 0.7, `tower-http` 0.5 and `tokio` with the `full` feature, so check those against your own `Cargo.toml` before pasting code. When a crate ships as both a library and a binary, the skill recommends an optional feature for the HTTP stack, otherwise everyone who depends on the library pulls in the web dependencies.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill axum -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/axum/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/axum/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill axum -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/axum/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill axum -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/axum/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills axum
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/axum/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill axum -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/rust/frameworks/axum
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/axum/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill axum -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- set up a typed router with nested routes
- turn a domain error into a status code and JSON body
- chain tracing, timeout and CORS layers
- drain in-flight requests on shutdown signals
- test a router without binding a real port

## Example prompts
- Build an axum router with a nested `/api/v1` and typed handlers
- Add an `AppError` type with `IntoResponse` and status mapping
- Wire graceful shutdown on SIGTERM for my axum server

# Axum (Rust) - Production Web APIs

## Overview

Axum is a Rust web framework built on Hyper and Tower. Use it for type-safe request handling with composable middleware, structured errors, and excellent testability.

## Quick Start

### Minimal server

✅ **Correct: typed handler + JSON response**
```rust
use axum::{routing::get, Json, Router};
use serde::Serialize;
use std::net::SocketAddr;
#[derive(Serialize)]
struct Health {
    status: &'static str,
}
async fn health() -> Json<Health> {
    Json(Health { status: "ok" })
}
#[tokio::main]
async fn main() {
    let app = Router::new().route("/health", get(health));
    let addr: SocketAddr = "0.0.0.0:3000".parse().unwrap();
    let listener = tokio::net::TcpListener::bind(addr).await.unwrap();
    axum::serve(listener, app).await.unwrap();
}
```

❌ **Wrong: block the async runtime**
```rust
async fn handler() {
    std::thread::sleep(std::time::Duration::from_secs(1)); // blocks executor
}
```

## Core Concepts

### Router + handlers

Handlers are async functions that return something implementing `IntoResponse`.

✅ **Correct: route nesting**
```rust
use axum::{routing::get, Router};
fn router() -> Router {
    let api = Router::new()
        .route("/users", get(list_users))
        .route("/users/:id", get(get_user));
    Router::new().nest("/api/v1", api)
}
async fn list_users() -> &'static str { "[]" }
async fn get_user() -> &'static str { "{}" }
```

### Extractors

Prefer extractors for parsing and validation at the boundary:

- `Path<T>`: typed path params
- `Query<T>`: query strings
- `Json<T>`: JSON bodies
- `State<T>`: shared application state

✅ **Correct: typed path + JSON**
```rust
use axum::{extract::Path, Json};
use serde::{Deserialize, Serialize};
#[derive(Deserialize)]
struct CreateUser {
    email: String,
}
#[derive(Serialize)]
struct User {
    id: String,
    email: String,
}
async fn create_user(Json(body): Json<CreateUser>) -> Json<User> {
    Json(User { id: "1".into(), email: body.email })
}
async fn get_user(Path(id): Path<String>) -> Json<User> {
