## What it does

The skill works with WhatsApp through AWS End User Messaging Social. It covers creating, updating, and deleting UTILITY, MARKETING, and AUTHENTICATION templates, using templates from the library, sending template or freeform messages, handling media, and configuring delivery event destinations. It also helps diagnose delivery failures.

AWS CLI must be installed and configured with suitable credentials and IAM permissions for templates, sending, media, events, and diagnostics. The AWS MCP server is recommended for API execution, audit logging, and enterprise controls, while the commands use standard AWS CLI syntax. Without configured AWS CLI access, the skill cannot carry out these operations.

Template messages do not use the 24-hour restriction. Freeform messages require a reply within 24 hours of the customer’s last inbound message. A successful `messageId` means the message was queued, not delivered. Before sending, validate identifiers, E.164 recipient numbers, locale codes, and base64-encoded JSON; batches over 5 messages need confirmation.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-social-messaging -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-social-messaging/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-social-messaging -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-social-messaging -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-social-messaging
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-social-messaging -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/customer-communications-skills/aws-social-messaging
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-social-messaging -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/customer-communications-skills/aws-social-messaging/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create and update WhatsApp templates
- send template and freeform messages
- upload media and reuse media IDs
- configure delivery event destinations
- diagnose failed message delivery

## Example prompts
- Set up WhatsApp messaging through AWS End User Messaging Social and verify AWS CLI access and IAM permissions first.
- Create a UTILITY template with parameters and prepare the AWS CLI command to send it.
- Investigate why a WhatsApp message was not delivered using delivery events and logs.

# AWS End User Messaging Social — WhatsApp

## Overview

WhatsApp messaging via AWS End User Messaging Social: template management, sending, media handling, event destinations, and delivery troubleshooting.

**Recommended setup:** Use the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/agent-toolkit/latest/userguide/mcp-server.html) for sandboxed execution, audit logging, and enterprise controls.

**Without AWS MCP:** This skill works with any agent that has AWS CLI access. All commands use standard AWS CLI syntax.

## Common Tasks

### 1. Verify Dependencies

**Constraints:**

- The AWS MCP server is recommended for seamless API execution but not required — all commands use standard AWS CLI syntax
- You MUST verify the AWS CLI is installed and configured with appropriate credentials
- You SHOULD recommend the user assume an IAM role with ephemeral credentials
- You MUST inform the user if any required tool is missing and how to install/configure it
- You MUST ask the user if they want to proceed despite any missing tools
- If the `aws socialmessaging` subcommand is not recognized, the user must update to the latest AWS CLI version
- Required IAM permissions (scope to specific WABA and phone number ARNs):
  - Templates: `social-messaging:CreateWhatsAppMessageTemplate`, `social-messaging:GetWhatsAppMessageTemplate`, `social-messaging:ListWhatsAppMessageTemplates`, `social-messaging:UpdateWhatsAppMessageTemplate`, `social-messaging:DeleteWhatsAppMessageTemplate`, `social-messaging:ListWhatsAppTemplateLibrary`, `social-messaging:CreateWhatsAppMessageTemplateFromLibrary`
  - Sending: `social-messaging:SendWhatsAppMessage`
```
