## What it does

This skill reviews AWS security architecture and evaluates service suitability. It analyzes traffic filtering overlaps between WAF and origins, inspection policies in AWS Network Firewall, network segmentation across Transit Gateway or Cloud WAN, and DNS Firewall suitability. When planning log architectures, it compares storage targets between CloudWatch and Security Lake.

It bundles references for GuardDuty, Inspector, Macie, Detective, and Security Hub (covering both V2/OCSF and CSPM standards). During finding reviews, the skill highlights correlated `AttackSequence` entries in GuardDuty and Exposure paths in Security Hub ahead of standard lists. Depending on the setup, instructions are read from local skill directories or fetched via the `retrieve_skill` tool in AWS MCP.

Every operation is strictly non-mutating. The skill cannot modify policies, trigger scans, author code, or recommend alert suppression rules. Because mutating APIs are forbidden, you must apply any recommended configuration changes manually or hand them to an implementation tool. Sensitive values such as private keys, access credentials, and secret headers are masked automatically.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-security -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-security/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-security/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-security -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-security/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-security -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-security/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-security
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-security/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-security -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/core-skills/aws-security
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-security/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-security -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/core-skills/aws-security/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- assess traffic inspection coverage in AWS Network Firewall
- prioritize GuardDuty attack sequences and Security Hub exposures
- evaluate log storage choices between CloudWatch and Security Lake
- review network segmentation rules across Transit Gateway and Cloud WAN

## Example prompts
- Review our AWS Network Firewall inspection coverage and policy
- Compare CloudWatch and Security Lake for centralized security logging
- List critical GuardDuty attack sequence findings without full account enumeration

# AWS Security

Use this skill with local AWS CLI or AWS MCP. AWS MCP is recommended for sandboxed execution and audit logging.

Read the relevant bundled procedure before operational guidance. Match intent before service name; reuse an already-read, current copy. For conceptual questions, explain from the relevant reference without AWS account discovery. Live reads require an account assessment request and established scope; an example, prioritization question or suitability question alone does not authorize discovery.

## Global rules

1. **Read-only APIs only.** This skill and all its references use exclusively non-mutating APIs. Never invoke mutating operations or provide write-API commands. Only the selected `service-recommendations` workflow may advise configuration and lifecycle changes in prose, with a separate implementation handoff for accepted recommendations. It covers focused service suitability and scoped evidence, never rule/code authoring or scan, analysis, query or export initiation. All other procedures report factual state. See the selected reference files for read-only API scope.
