## What it does

This skill provides patterns for interacting with `RdsClient` using AWS SDK for Java 2.x. It helps the AI agent write valid Java code to provision database instances, turn on storage encryption, configure VPC security groups, and set backup retention windows.

Code patterns rely on SDK waiters such as `waitUntilDBInstanceAvailable`. The client waits until the database instance reaches the available status before moving forward. This prevents downstream scripts from crashing on an unready database. Using these patterns requires adding the AWS RDS SDK dependency and matching database drivers to the Java build.

It also outlines database maintenance workflows. These include parameter group management, manual snapshot triggers, and instance deletion with mandatory final snapshots.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-sdk-java-v2-rds -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-sdk-java-v2-rds -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-sdk-java-v2-rds -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit aws-sdk-java-v2-rds
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-sdk-java-v2-rds -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-sdk-java-v2-rds/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill aws-sdk-java-v2-rds -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- instantiate an RdsClient with custom timeouts and credential providers
- provision a secure PostgreSQL RDS instance with Multi-AZ deployment
- block execution until the newly created database reaches available status
- trigger manual RDS snapshots prior to major updates
- safely delete an RDS instance while preserving a final database snapshot

## Example prompts
- Write a Java method using AWS SDK v2 to create an RDS PostgreSQL instance with Multi-AZ and wait until it is available.
- Show how to safely delete an Amazon RDS database with a final snapshot using RdsClient.
- Configure an RdsClient bean with ApacheHttpClient custom connection and socket timeouts.

# AWS SDK for Java v2 - RDS Management

## Overview

This skill provides comprehensive guidance for working with Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) using the AWS SDK for Java 2.x, covering database instance management, snapshots, parameter groups, and RDS operations.

## When to Use

- Creating, modifying, or deleting RDS database instances
- Managing DB snapshots, parameter groups, and configurations
- Setting up Multi-AZ deployments and automated backups
- Connecting Lambda functions to RDS databases
- Monitoring instance status and performance

## Instructions

Follow these steps to work with Amazon RDS:

1. **Add Dependencies** - Include AWS RDS SDK dependency and database drivers
2. **Create RDS Client** - Instantiate RdsClient with proper region and credentials
3. **Create DB Instance** - Use createDBInstance() with appropriate configuration
4. **Configure Security** - Set up VPC security groups and encryption
5. **Set Up Backups** - Configure automated backup windows and retention
6. **Monitor Status** - Use describeDBInstances() to check instance state
7. **Create Snapshots** - Take manual snapshots before major changes
8. **Handle Failover** - Configure Multi-AZ for high availability

## Getting Started

### RDS Client Setup

The `RdsClient` is the main entry point for interacting with Amazon RDS.

**Basic Client Creation:**
```java
import software.amazon.awssdk.regions.Region;
import software.amazon.awssdk.services.rds.RdsClient;
RdsClient rdsClient = RdsClient.builder()
    .region(Region.US_EAST_1)
    .build();
// Use client
describeInstances(rdsClient);
// Always close the client
rdsClient.close();
```

**Client with Custom Configuration:**
```java
import software.amazon.awssdk.auth.credentials.ProfileCredentialsProvider;
import software.amazon.awssdk.http.apache.ApacheHttpClient;
RdsClient rdsClient = RdsClient.builder()
    .region(Region.US_WEST_2)
    .credentialsProvider(ProfileCredentialsProvider.create("myprofile"))
    .httpClient(ApacheHttpClient.builder()
        .connectionTimeout(Duration.ofSeconds(30))
        .socketTimeout(Duration.ofSeconds(60))
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 208cf135d32b600b tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
