## What it does

The skill covers managed relational databases on AWS through `aws rds`. It ships ready-made commands: create a DB subnet group, launch a PostgreSQL 16 instance in Multi-AZ, tune a parameter group, add read replicas, take snapshots and restore. Your agent fills in the identifiers and runs the steps in order.

You need AWS CLI v2 configured with `rds:*`, `ec2:DescribeSecurityGroups`, `ec2:DescribeSubnets`, `kms:*` and `cloudwatch:*` permissions. A VPC with at least two subnets in different availability zones is required too, otherwise the subnet group cannot be built. You do not have to type the master password: with `--manage-master-user-password` RDS stores it in Secrets Manager, and the skill shows how to read it back with `aws secretsmanager get-secret-value`.

The source cuts off inside the point-in-time recovery section, so the full restore-to-a-second procedure is not spelled out here. For production the skill turns on `--deletion-protection` and `--storage-encrypted` with a KMS key right away — worth checking that you already have that key and the `rds-monitoring-role` for enhanced monitoring.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-rds -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-rds/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-rds/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-rds -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-rds/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-rds -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-rds/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills aws-rds
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-rds/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-rds -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-rds
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-rds/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-rds -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-rds/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- launch a Multi-AZ PostgreSQL instance with encryption and deletion protection
- add a read replica to offload reads or run DR in another region
- tune a parameter group instead of running on defaults
- snapshot a database before a migration and restore from it
- turn on Performance Insights and CloudWatch log exports

## Example prompts
- Create a production PostgreSQL 16 instance in Multi-AZ using the aws-rds skill, subnets from production-db-subnets
- Add a read replica for production-api-db and check replication lag
- Take a snapshot of production-api-db before the migration and show me how to restore it

# AWS RDS

Deploy and manage Amazon RDS relational databases with production-grade backups, replication, monitoring, and security.

## When to Use This Skill

- Provisioning a managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, or SQL Server database
- Setting up Multi-AZ deployments for high availability
- Creating read replicas for horizontal read scaling
- Configuring automated backups, snapshots, and point-in-time recovery
- Tuning database parameters for performance
- Migrating from self-managed databases to RDS
- Monitoring database performance and setting up alarms

## Prerequisites

- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured
- IAM permissions: `rds:*`, `ec2:DescribeSecurityGroups`, `ec2:DescribeSubnets`, `kms:*`, `cloudwatch:*`
- A VPC with at least two subnets in different AZs (for subnet group)
- Security group allowing database port access from application subnets only

## Create a DB Subnet Group

```bash
# Create a subnet group spanning two AZs
aws rds create-db-subnet-group \
  --db-subnet-group-name production-db-subnets \
  --db-subnet-group-description "Production database subnets" \
  --subnet-ids subnet-private-a subnet-private-b
# List subnet groups
aws rds describe-db-subnet-groups \
  --query "DBSubnetGroups[].{Name:DBSubnetGroupName,VPC:VpcId,Status:SubnetGroupStatus}" \
  --output table
```

## Create a Production Database

```bash
# Create a PostgreSQL 16 Multi-AZ instance
aws rds create-db-instance \
  --db-instance-identifier production-api-db \
  --db-instance-class db.r6g.large \
  --engine postgres \
  --engine-version 16.4 \
  --master-username appadmin \
  --manage-master-user-password \
  --allocated-storage 100 \
  --max-allocated-storage 500 \
  --storage-type gp3 \
  --storage-encrypted \
  --kms-key-id alias/rds-key \
  --vpc-security-group-ids sg-db-access \
  --db-subnet-group-name production-db-subnets \
  --db-name appdb \
  --backup-retention-period 14 \
  --preferred-backup-window "03:00-04:00" \
  --preferred-maintenance-window "sun:05:00-sun:06:00" \
  --multi-az \
  --auto-minor-version-upgrade \
  --deletion-protection \
  --copy-tags-to-snapshot \
  --monitoring-interval 60 \
