## What it does

The skill handles CloudWatch work for services that already report telemetry: Log Insights, metrics, composite and anomaly alarms, dashboards, X-Ray, ADOT tracing, canaries, CloudTrail, and Dynamic Instrumentation. It can also investigate service state through Application Signals.

For CloudWatch Omni, it identifies the relevant product and works with an existing Space. It can draft SQL queries over logs and traces, PromQL metric queries, views, alerts, and context-graph investigations. API, SDK, CLI, and CloudFormation access are covered too.

Initial Omni setup, access grants, telemetry ingestion, and ADOT instrumentation belong in `setting-up-cloudwatch-observability`. That means your service should already emit telemetry before you ask for dashboards or queries.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-observability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-observability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-observability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-observability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-observability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-observability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/core-skills/aws-observability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-observability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/core-skills/aws-observability/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- investigate an incident through CloudWatch logs and traces
- write a Log Insights query for service logs
- configure a metric or anomaly alarm
- draft an SQL or PromQL query for CloudWatch Omni
- trace a likely root cause with the Omni context graph

## Example prompts
- Investigate this service issue using CloudWatch logs and traces.
- Write a PromQL query for metrics in my CloudWatch Omni Space.
- Create a composite CloudWatch alarm from the metrics already available.

# AWS Observability

## Overview

Domain expertise for AWS observability across metrics, logs, and traces, for **two
products** that share the CloudWatch name but are separate services with separate
control planes, data models, and APIs:

| | CloudWatch | CloudWatch Omni |
|---|---|---|
| **What it is** | Log groups, metric namespaces, alarms, Log Insights, X-Ray, Application Signals | Application Observability / Agent Observability. A **Space** per account per Region is the access boundary over the account's CloudWatch **Dataset** (OpenTelemetry logs, traces, and metrics); the Dataset is a CloudWatch resource the Space reads, not something the Space contains |
| **Control plane** | `aws cloudwatch`, `aws logs`, `aws xray`, `aws application-signals` | `aws cloudwatchomni` (endpoint prefix `cloudwatch-omni`, signing name `cloudwatch`) |
| **Query** | Log Insights query language; GetMetricData | SQL over `logs.default` / `traces.default`; PromQL over metrics; named views |
| **Notify** | Alarms (metric, composite, anomaly) | **Alerts** (SQL/PromQL rule, contributors, OK/WARNING/CRITICAL/NODATA) |
| **Topology** | Application Signals service map | **Context graph** (GetContextGraph) |
| **Access** | IAM only | Domain → Space → **access grants** and **access profiles** (set up in `setting-up-cloudwatch-observability`) |
| **Only here** | Dynamic Instrumentation, Synthetics canaries, CloudTrail auditing, EMF | Agent-quality evaluation, views, context graph |
