# aws-messaging-and-streaming

Tells the agent which AWS service moves your data: a queue, an event bus or a log. Useful before you commit to SQS or Kinesis.

## What it does

The skill gives the agent a map of how data travels between components in AWS. It separates messaging from streaming and names the service behind each pattern: `Amazon SQS`, `Amazon SNS`, `Amazon EventBridge` and `Amazon MQ` on one side, `Amazon Kinesis Data Streams` and `Amazon Data Firehose` on the other. It also draws the line where app-to-app traffic stops and app-to-person starts: email runs through `Amazon SES`, while WhatsApp, SMS, MMS, RCS, voice and mobile push belong to the AWS End User Messaging family.

No scripts inside. This is a reference `SKILL.md` that describes the patterns, how the services behave differently and where one service's job ends. Asked for exact limits, versions or configuration options, it sends the agent to the service skill or the AWS docs, because an invented option does more damage than a straight admission that the answer isn't known. Name a channel explicitly and the request goes to that channel's skill.

One limit to know up front: customer communication channels are out of scope here, the skill only routes them. The same goes for `Amazon MSK` and Managed Service for Apache Flink, which have their own skills. If your project runs a single Kafka cluster and nothing else, this will mostly sit quiet; the value shows up when you weigh options or need to know who owns what.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-messaging-and-streaming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-messaging-and-streaming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-messaging-and-streaming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-messaging-and-streaming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-messaging-and-streaming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/core-skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-messaging-and-streaming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/core-skills/aws-messaging-and-streaming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick between an SQS queue and a Kinesis stream for a given workload
- fan out one event to several independent subscribers
- move a legacy JMS or AMQP app onto Amazon MQ without a rewrite
- work out which AWS service handles SMS and WhatsApp instead of reaching for a queue
- explain why a record can be replayed in one pattern and vanishes after processing in the other

## Example prompts
- Compare Amazon SQS and Kinesis Data Streams for a clickstream pipeline and tell me which fits
- I need fan-out to several services, look at SNS and EventBridge and sketch the wiring
- Which AWS service should send SMS and mobile push to customers?

  Guides general use of AWS messaging and streaming services. Covers Amazon SQS,
  Amazon SNS, Amazon EventBridge, Amazon MQ, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams,
  Amazon Data Firehose, Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink, and Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (MSK).
  Use when reasoning about messaging and streaming patterns.
  Also identifies which AWS service owns each customer communication channel:
  email (Amazon SES), and WhatsApp, SMS, MMS, RCS, voice and mobile push
  (the AWS End User Messaging family of services).
  Routes the request to the specialized skill for that channel.
  Defers to the channel's specialized skill when the user already named a specific channel.
  In general, use specific skills or documentation searches for detailed service-specific questions.
  Do NOT use for MSK or Managed Service for Apache Flink questions, prefer specific skills.
  Does not configure customer communication channels; defers to specific skills.

# AWS Messaging & Streaming Services

When answering AWS messaging and streaming questions, verify specific numbers, versions, limits, and behavioral details from service-specific skills or official AWS documentation. When uncertain, search skills or docs rather than guessing. Fabricated configuration options or incorrect version numbers are worse than admitting uncertainty.

When a question asks about recommended configurations (CloudWatch alarm settings, thresholds, missing data treatment), search for the service-specific skills or documentation rather than relying on general best practices.

## Overview

Domain expertise for choosing and using AWS services that move data between producers and consumers.
This skill covers two fundamental patterns — **messaging** and **streaming** — and the AWS services that implement each.
