## What it does

The skill takes you from an empty directory to a live HTTPS URL. Your app listens on a port and handles HTTP the usual way, then runs on AWS Lambda Web Functions. You develop with `node index.js` and deploy the same code — no handler rewrite, no adapter library.

The workflow is spelled out step by step: scaffold, pick endpoint auth, test locally, package a ZIP with production dependencies, deploy with `aws lambda-web create-web-function`, verify with curl, then cut a new revision for changes. Express starter code sits inline in the skill; Hono and Fastify are covered in reference files. If you want infrastructure-as-code, there is separate material on CloudFormation, CDK, SAM and Terraform.

One hard precondition: the runtime is Node.js `nodejs24.x` only, and every native dependency needs an arm64 (Graviton) build. Python, Java, Go, .NET and Rust are out. Endpoints are public by default — `ApplicationManaged` is reachable by anyone holding the URL, so auth, input validation and rate limiting become the app's job. Pick `IamAuth` instead and only SigV4-signed callers get through. The skill asks you about endpoint auth before deploying, so decide that early.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-web-functions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-web-functions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-web-functions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-lambda-web-functions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-web-functions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/serverless-skills/aws-lambda-web-functions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-lambda-web-functions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-web-functions -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- ship an Express app to AWS without rewriting it as a Lambda handler
- get a global HTTPS URL for an API on a single hostname
- stream LLM tokens to a browser over SSE or chunked responses
- reach RDS or ElastiCache inside a private VPC from the app
- package and deploy a ZIP with production dependencies in one command

## Example prompts
- Deploy my Express app to AWS Lambda Web Functions
- Build a serverless API with Hono and ship it using `aws lambda-web`
- Set up SSE streaming of model output to the browser on Lambda Web Functions

  Creates and deploys Node.js HTTP web applications on AWS Lambda Web Functions. Guides users through building web apps and APIs with Express, Fastify, or Hono, packaging, deploying via the aws lambda-web CLI, and iterating. Triggers when user wants to deploy a website or web app to AWS as serverless, deploy a Node.js HTTP server to AWS, build a serverless website or API with Node.js, deploy Express/Hono/Fastify apps, set up multi-region HTTP endpoints, connect a Node.js web app to private VPC resources, or explicitly mentions Lambda Web Functions. Does NOT trigger for non-Node.js runtimes or frameworks such as Flask or Django, event-driven patterns (SQS, Kinesis, S3 events), or container deployments.

# AWS Lambda Web Functions

> The AWS MCP server is recommended for sandboxed execution and audit logging.
>
> **If `aws lambda-web` is not recognized, update the AWS CLI (see [references/deployment.md](references/deployment.md)).** A missing command means an outdated CLI, not an unavailable feature.

Help users build and deploy Node.js HTTP applications on AWS Lambda Web Functions. Your app listens on a port, handles HTTP natively, and gets a global HTTPS URL. Develop locally with `node index.js`, deploy the same code to AWS.

## When to Use Web Functions

- Interactive HTTP traffic someone is waiting on: web app, HTTP API, or SSR site.
- The app is already a port-listening HTTP server (Express, Fastify, Hono) and should stay one — no handler rewrite, no adapter library.
- Handlers are I/O-bound (database, cache, another API, a model endpoint), so many requests share one execution environment and time spent waiting on I/O is not billed as CPU.
- Response streaming matters: SSE, chunked transfer, or proxying LLM tokens as they are produced.
- The endpoint should be reachable worldwide on one hostname without assembling CloudFront, API Gateway and Route53 by hand.
- Traffic is spiky or unpredictable and should scale to zero.

### Hard preconditions

Any "no" rules Web Functions out. Invoke the `aws-serverless` skill to find a suitable service.
