## What it does

This skill walks through whether AWS Lambda Managed Instances fit your workload. It runs Lambda Event Functions on EC2 instances inside your account, with AWS handling provisioning, patching, scaling, routing and load balancing. Seven reference files sit behind a routing table: cost comparison, configuration, thread safety, migration patterns, infrastructure setup and troubleshooting. Only the one matching your task gets read.

Duration is the main reason to look here. Asynchronous and event-source-mapping invocations (SQS, Kinesis, DynamoDB Streams) can run up to 5400 seconds, raised through the existing `Timeout` field with no separate API. Synchronous and On-Demand calls stay capped at 15 minutes. Before recommending anything, the skill gathers traffic pattern, current spend, runtime, memory, concurrency readiness and VPC status.

Some limits are fixed. Three execution environments are the floor for AZ resiliency, and production cannot go lower. Memory starts at 2048 MB. On Graviton you must set `Architectures: [arm64]` to match. A capacity provider stuck in CREATING usually means private subnets lack a NAT gateway route, because instances need outbound internet for image pulls and Lambda service calls. The AWS MCP server gives sandboxed CLI execution and audit logging; plain AWS CLI or SAM CLI works too.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-managed-instances -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-managed-instances -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-managed-instances -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-lambda-managed-instances
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-managed-instances -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/serverless-skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-lambda-managed-instances/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-lambda-managed-instances -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- decide if moving off Lambda Event Functions to LMI pays off
- raise a function timeout to 90 minutes for ESM invocations
- pick instance families and a memory-to-vCPU ratio
- check code for thread safety before migrating
- debug a capacity provider stuck in CREATING

## Example prompts
- Compare my Lambda costs against Lambda Managed Instances — traffic is steady
- I need to raise the function timeout to 5400 seconds for SQS invocations
- Review my code for thread safety before I migrate to LMI

# AWS Lambda Managed Instances (LMI)

Runs Lambda Event Functions on EC2 instances in the user's account while AWS manages provisioning, patching, scaling, routing, and load balancing. Combines Lambda's developer experience with EC2's pricing and hardware options.

**Works best with** the [AWS MCP server](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-mcp/) for sandboxed CLI execution and audit logging. All guidance also works with standard AWS CLI or SAM CLI.

**Note:** Confirm regional availability, quotas, and instance type offerings against current AWS documentation before production deployment.

## Quick Decision: Is LMI Right for This Workload?

| Signal | LMI is a strong fit | Lambda Event Functions are better |
|--------|---------------------|---------------------------|
| Traffic | Steady, predictable, 50M+ req/mo | Bursty, unpredictable, long periods of no traffic |
