## What it does

This skill provides structured AWS CLI workflows to run containerized workloads on Amazon ECS using Fargate serverless compute or EC2. It covers cluster setup with Fargate and Fargate Spot capacity providers, image pushing to Amazon ECR, task definition registration, and service creation behind an Application Load Balancer. Definitions include log routing to CloudWatch, health checks, and secrets injected from Secrets Manager and SSM Parameter Store.

Deployments rely on rolling updates with a deployment circuit breaker for automated rollback. When tasks crash, the guide uses `aws ecs execute-command` to open an interactive container shell for troubleshooting.

You need AWS CLI v2, Docker, an existing VPC with subnets and an ALB, plus IAM permissions for ECS, ECR, Elastic Load Balancing, and PassRole. Missing network infrastructure will break service deployment immediately.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ecs-fargate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ecs-fargate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ecs-fargate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills aws-ecs-fargate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ecs-fargate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-ecs-fargate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-ecs-fargate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ecs-fargate -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- deploy Docker containers to AWS Fargate without managing EC2 instances
- configure ECS task definitions with secrets from AWS Secrets Manager and SSM
- launch an ECS service behind an Application Load Balancer with circuit breaker rollback
- set up target tracking auto-scaling policies for container tasks
- open an interactive shell inside running ECS containers with `execute-command`

## Example prompts
- Configure an ECS Fargate task definition with CloudWatch logging and Secrets Manager credentials
- Create an ECS service behind an ALB with deployment circuit breaker enabled
- How do I exec into a running ECS task container using execute-command?

# AWS ECS & Fargate

Run containerized applications on Amazon ECS with Fargate serverless compute or EC2 launch type.

## When to Use This Skill

- Deploying Docker containers to AWS without managing servers (Fargate)
- Running microservices with service discovery and load balancing
- Setting up blue/green or rolling deployments for containerized apps
- Configuring auto-scaling for container workloads
- Migrating from docker-compose or Kubernetes to ECS
- Troubleshooting task failures, health check issues, or networking problems

## Prerequisites

- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured
- Docker installed for building and pushing images
- IAM permissions: `ecs:*`, `ecr:*`, `elasticloadbalancing:*`, `logs:*`, `iam:PassRole`
- An ECR repository for storing container images
- A VPC with subnets and an ALB (see [aws-vpc](../aws-vpc/))

## Cluster Setup

```bash
# Create an ECS cluster with Container Insights enabled
aws ecs create-cluster \
  --cluster-name production \
  --capacity-providers FARGATE FARGATE_SPOT \
  --default-capacity-provider-strategy '[
    {"capacityProvider": "FARGATE", "weight": 1, "base": 2},
    {"capacityProvider": "FARGATE_SPOT", "weight": 3}
  ]' \
  --settings '[{"name": "containerInsights", "value": "enabled"}]'
# List clusters
aws ecs list-clusters
# Describe cluster details
aws ecs describe-clusters --clusters production --include STATISTICS ATTACHMENTS
```

## Push Image to ECR

```bash
# Create ECR repository
aws ecr create-repository \
  --repository-name myapp \
  --image-scanning-configuration scanOnPush=true \
  --encryption-configuration encryptionType=KMS
# Authenticate Docker to ECR
aws ecr get-login-password --region us-east-1 | \
  docker login --username AWS --password-stdin 123456789012.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
# Build, tag, and push
docker build -t myapp:latest .
docker tag myapp:latest 123456789012.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/myapp:latest
docker push 123456789012.dkr.ecr.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/myapp:latest
```

## Task Definition

```json
{
  "family": "myapp",
  "networkMode": "awsvpc",
  "requiresCompatibilities": ["FARGATE"],
  "cpu": "512",
  "memory": "1024",
