## What it does

The skill walks through EC2 work end to end: starting instances, building golden AMIs, putting auto scaling groups behind a load balancer, shifting load onto Spot to cut cost. It ships AWS CLI commands and a table for picking instance families across general purpose, compute optimized, memory optimized, storage optimized, accelerated and burstable categories.

You need AWS CLI v2 with `aws configure` already run, plus permissions for `ec2:*`, `autoscaling:*`, `elasticloadbalancing:*` and `iam:PassRole`. An existing VPC with subnets and a created key pair are also required — without the key you cannot reach the instance. Examples cover user data for Amazon Linux 2023 with nginx, the CloudWatch agent and CodeDeploy, and launch templates with versions and IMDSv2 settings.

Auto scaling appears as a mixed instances policy: on-demand base capacity, Spot above it using the `capacity-optimized` allocation strategy. A target tracking policy holds average CPU at 60%, and scheduled actions cover weekday morning and evening traffic. All of it fits repeatable infrastructure, though IAM deserves care: `iam:PassRole` hands the instance the profile's rights, so extra permissions there are a real risk.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ec2 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-ec2/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-ec2/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ec2 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-ec2/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ec2 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-ec2/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills aws-ec2
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-ec2/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ec2 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-ec2
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-ec2/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-ec2 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-ec2/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- launch an instance for a web app with the right type and tags
- build a golden AMI for identical deployments
- set up auto scaling behind a load balancer
- move part of the load to Spot and lower spend
- debug an instance that fails to start or loses connectivity

## Example prompts
- Create a launch template for the web server with nginx in user data and IMDSv2 required
- Set up an auto scaling group from 2 to 10 instances with CPU target tracking
- Pick an instance type for an in-memory cache and explain the choice

# AWS EC2

Deploy and manage Amazon EC2 compute instances for production, staging, and development workloads.

## When to Use This Skill

- Launching new compute instances for application hosting
- Building golden AMIs for consistent deployments
- Setting up auto-scaling groups behind load balancers
- Migrating workloads to Spot instances for cost savings
- Troubleshooting instance connectivity, performance, or launch failures
- Creating launch templates for repeatable infrastructure

## Prerequisites

- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured (`aws configure`)
- IAM permissions: `ec2:*`, `autoscaling:*`, `elasticloadbalancing:*`, `iam:PassRole`
- An existing VPC with subnets (see [aws-vpc](../aws-vpc/))
- SSH key pair created (`aws ec2 create-key-pair --key-name my-key --query 'KeyMaterial' --output text > my-key.pem`)

## Instance Type Selection Guide

| Category | Types | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| General Purpose | t3, t3a, m6i, m7g | Web servers, small databases, dev/test |
| Compute Optimized | c6i, c7g | Batch processing, media encoding, ML inference |
| Memory Optimized | r6i, r7g, x2idn | In-memory caches, large databases |
| Storage Optimized | i3, i4i, d3 | Data warehousing, distributed file systems |
| Accelerated | p4d, g5, inf2 | ML training, GPU rendering, inference |
| Burstable | t3.micro-t3.2xlarge | Low-steady-state with occasional bursts |

## Launch an Instance

```bash
# Launch a production web server
aws ec2 run-instances \
  --image-id ami-0abcdef1234567890 \
  --instance-type t3.medium \
  --key-name my-key \
  --security-group-ids sg-12345678 \
  --subnet-id subnet-12345678 \
  --iam-instance-profile Name=EC2AppProfile \
  --metadata-options "HttpTokens=required,HttpEndpoint=enabled" \
  --block-device-mappings '[{
      "Iops": 3000,
      "Throughput": 125,
      "Encrypted": true
    }
  }]' \
  --tag-specifications 'ResourceType=instance,Tags=[
