## What it does

This skill gives the agent a set of AWS conventions so it stops inventing project structure from scratch. It covers Lambda, CDK, DynamoDB, IAM, SAM, API Gateway, Step Functions, encryption, logging, and testing. For Lambda it recommends TypeScript on ARM64, environment variables instead of hardcoded values, and error handling with retries. For CDK it points at `aws-cdk-lib`, custom constructs, and splitting resources into separate stacks by functional group.

The project layout is spelled out: `constructs/`, `stacks/`, `functions/`, `tests/`. Code samples come with it — a typed API Gateway handler, a CDK construct, a SAM template with `Globals` and tracing, an IAM policy scoped to three DynamoDB actions, and a DynamoDB client mock for tests. IAM follows least privilege with roles rather than access keys, and secrets belong in Secrets Manager or Parameter Store.

There is also a list of common mistakes: hardcoded credentials, wrong Lambda timeouts, overly broad IAM policies, missing CloudWatch alarms. If your project does not run on AWS, none of this applies. Integration testing references localstack and SAM local, and template validation uses `cfn-lint`.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill aws-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill aws-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill aws-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills aws-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill aws-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path aws-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill aws-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/aws-development/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a CDK project into stacks and custom constructs
- write an IAM policy with only the permissions a function needs
- design a DynamoDB table around access patterns
- set up a SAM template with tracing and ARM64
- mock AWS SDK calls in unit tests

## Example prompts
- Write a TypeScript Lambda handler that validates the request body and handles errors
- Split the infrastructure into CDK stacks: storage, compute, api
- Draft an IAM policy for a function that only needs GetItem, PutItem and Query on one table

# AWS Development Best Practices

## Overview

This skill provides comprehensive guidelines for developing applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS), focusing on serverless architecture, Infrastructure as Code, and security best practices.

## Core Principles

- Write clean, well-structured code with accurate AWS SDK examples
- Use Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CDK, SAM) for all infrastructure
- Follow the principle of least privilege for all IAM policies
- Implement comprehensive logging, metrics, and tracing for observability

## AWS Lambda Guidelines

### Configuration Standards
- Use TypeScript implementation on ARM64 architecture for better performance and cost
- Set appropriate memory and timeout values based on workload requirements
- Use environment variables for configuration, never hardcode values
- Implement proper error handling and retry logic

### Lambda Best Practices
```typescript
// Use ES modules and typed handlers
import { APIGatewayProxyHandler } from 'aws-lambda';
export const handler: APIGatewayProxyHandler = async (event) => {
  try {
    // Validate input at function start
    if (!event.body) {
      return { statusCode: 400, body: JSON.stringify({ error: 'Missing body' }) };
    }
    // Business logic here
    return { statusCode: 200, body: JSON.stringify({ success: true }) };
  } catch (error) {
    console.error('Lambda error:', error);
    return { statusCode: 500, body: JSON.stringify({ error: 'Internal error' }) };
  }
};
```

## AWS CDK Guidelines

### Implementation Standards
- Use `aws-cdk-lib` with explicit `aws_*` prefixes
- Implement custom constructs for reusable patterns
- Separate concerns into distinct CloudFormation stacks
- Organize resources by functional groups: storage, compute, authentication, API, access

### Project Structure
```
aws/
├── constructs/     # CDK custom constructs
├── stacks/         # CloudFormation stack definitions
├── functions/      # Lambda function implementations
└── tests/          # Infrastructure tests
```

### CDK Best Practices
```typescript
import * as cdk from 'aws-cdk-lib';
import * as lambda from 'aws-cdk-lib/aws_lambda';
import * as dynamodb from 'aws-cdk-lib/aws_dynamodb';
// Use custom constructs for reusable patterns
export class ApiConstruct extends Construct {
