## What it does

The skill walks through a cost review in order: tag resources by team, service, environment and cost center, turn on Cost Explorer and Cost and Usage Reports to S3, find the top spend drivers, rightsize compute and storage from CloudWatch metrics, then apply commitment discounts and set alerts. It ships ready AWS CLI calls such as `aws ce get-cost-and-usage`, `aws ce get-cost-forecast`, `aws ce get-rightsizing-recommendation` and `aws ce get-savings-plans-purchase-recommendation`.

Budgets and anomalies get their own sections: `aws budgets create-budget` with thresholds at 80% and 100%, plus `aws ce create-anomaly-monitor` and a subscription that fires past a set impact. There are commands for hunting waste too — unattached EBS volumes, old snapshots, unassociated Elastic IPs, idle load balancers — and an S3 lifecycle policy that moves data to `STANDARD_IA` after 30 days.

Check your access before you rely on it. You need AWS CLI v2 configured with `aws configure`, permissions for `ce:*`, `budgets:*`, `ec2:Describe*`, `cloudwatch:PutMetricAlarm` and `s3:PutLifecycleConfiguration`, Cost Explorer enabled, and cost allocation tags activated. Cost Explorer takes 24 hours to populate, so queries run against a fresh account come back empty and the whole review stalls.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-cost-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-cost-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-cost-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-cost-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills aws-cost-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-cost-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-cost-optimization
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill aws-cost-optimization -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/cloud-aws/aws-cost-optimization/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- explain an unexpected jump in the monthly AWS bill
- rightsize EC2 and RDS from CloudWatch metrics
- pick between Savings Plans, Reserved Instances and on-demand
- set a budget with alerts at 80% and 100%
- clear out unattached EBS volumes and old snapshots

## Example prompts
- Run a cost review on our AWS account and show the top spend drivers for the last 30 days
- Create a monthly budget that emails us at 80% and 100%
- Find unattached EBS volumes and unassociated Elastic IPs

# AWS Cost Optimization

Apply practical FinOps controls to reduce AWS spend without sacrificing reliability or performance.

## When to Use This Skill

- Monthly AWS bill spikes unexpectedly or exceeds budget thresholds
- Preparing cost reviews with engineering and finance teams
- Rightsizing EC2, RDS, EKS, or Lambda workloads after load testing
- Choosing between Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, or on-demand pricing
- Setting up automated budget alerts and anomaly detection
- Cleaning up unused resources (unattached EBS, idle load balancers, old snapshots)
- Optimizing data transfer costs across regions and AZs

## Prerequisites

- AWS CLI v2 installed and configured (`aws configure`)
- IAM permissions: `ce:*`, `budgets:*`, `ec2:Describe*`, `cloudwatch:PutMetricAlarm`, `s3:PutLifecycleConfiguration`
- Cost Explorer enabled in the AWS billing console (takes 24 hours to populate)
- Cost allocation tags activated in the Billing console

## Cost Review Workflow

1. Tag every resource by team, service, environment, and cost center.
2. Enable Cost Explorer and activate Cost and Usage Reports (CUR) to S3.
3. Identify top spend drivers by service, account, and tag.
4. Rightsize underutilized compute and storage based on CloudWatch metrics.
5. Apply commitment discounts (Savings Plans or RIs) for stable baseline usage.
6. Set budgets, anomaly alerts, and build KPI dashboards.
7. Review monthly and iterate.

## Cost Explorer CLI Commands

```bash
# Get cost and usage for the last 30 days grouped by service
aws ce get-cost-and-usage \
  --time-period Start=2026-02-01,End=2026-03-01 \
  --granularity MONTHLY \
  --metrics "BlendedCost" "UnblendedCost" "UsageQuantity" \
  --group-by Type=DIMENSION,Key=SERVICE
# Get cost forecast for the next 30 days
aws ce get-cost-forecast \
  --time-period Start=2026-03-24,End=2026-04-24 \
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 019bfcb41efc6696 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
