## What it does

The skill bundles three MCP servers: `pricing` for pre-deployment price checks, `costexp` for AWS Cost Explorer spending reports, and `cw` for CloudWatch metrics and alarms. It evaluates multi-region pricing before creating resources. The agent verifies facts against official AWS documentation MCP tools prior to answering.

Direct CLI actions rely on `aws ce`, `aws cloudwatch`, `aws logs`, `aws budgets`, and `aws cloudtrail`. A `PreToolUse` hook runs before any Cost Explorer call. It executes `aws sts get-caller-identity` once to confirm the active account. This guards against querying the wrong AWS account.

Servers for CloudTrail, Managed Prometheus, and Security Assessment are not bundled in this skill. They require setting up `aws-mcp-setup` separately. Without configured AWS credentials and IAM permissions in your environment, these tools will simply fail.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zxkane/aws-skills --skill aws-cost-operations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-cost-operations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-cost-operations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zxkane/aws-skills --skill aws-cost-operations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-cost-operations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zxkane/aws-skills --skill aws-cost-operations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-cost-operations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zxkane/aws-skills aws-cost-operations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-cost-operations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zxkane/aws-skills --skill aws-cost-operations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zxkane/aws-skills --path plugins/aws-cost-ops/skills/aws-cost-operations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-cost-operations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zxkane/aws-skills --skill aws-cost-operations -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- estimate monthly running costs for Lambda or EC2 before deployment
- identify spending spikes and unexpected charges using Cost Explorer
- configure CloudWatch alarms for high CPU load or Lambda error rates
- verify active AWS account credentials via AWS STS

## Example prompts
- Estimate the monthly cost of running a Lambda function with 1 million invocations, 512MB memory, 3-second duration in us-east-1
- Analyze spending anomalies from last month using Cost Explorer
- Create a CloudWatch alarm when EC2 CPU utilization exceeds 80%

# AWS Cost & Operations

This skill provides comprehensive guidance for AWS cost optimization, monitoring, observability, and operational excellence with integrated MCP servers.

## AWS Documentation Requirement

Always verify AWS facts using MCP tools (`mcp__aws-mcp__*` or `mcp__*awsdocs*__*`) before answering. The `aws-mcp-setup` dependency is auto-loaded — if MCP tools are unavailable, guide the user through that skill's setup flow.

## Integrated MCP Servers

This plugin provides 3 MCP servers:

### Bundled Servers

#### 1. AWS Pricing MCP Server (`pricing`)
**Purpose**: Pre-deployment cost estimation and optimization
- Estimate costs before deploying resources
- Compare pricing across regions
- Calculate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
- Evaluate different service options for cost efficiency

#### 2. AWS Cost Explorer MCP Server (`costexp`)
**Purpose**: Detailed cost analysis and reporting
- Analyze historical spending patterns
- Identify cost anomalies and trends
- Forecast future costs
- Analyze cost by service, region, or tag

#### 3. Amazon CloudWatch MCP Server (`cw`)
**Purpose**: Metrics, alarms, and logs analysis
- Query CloudWatch metrics and logs
- Create and manage CloudWatch alarms
- Troubleshoot operational issues
- Monitor resource utilization

> **Note**: The following servers are available separately via the Full AWS MCP Server (see `aws-mcp-setup` skill) and are not bundled with this plugin:
> - AWS Billing and Cost Management MCP — Real-time billing details
> - CloudWatch Application Signals MCP — APM and SLOs
> - AWS Managed Prometheus MCP — PromQL queries for containers
> - AWS CloudTrail MCP — API activity audit
```
