## What it does

The skill works through a gated sequence. It pins down the workload and review mode, walks the infrastructure and application architecture, then pulls the current set of questions and best practices straight from AWS documentation. Assessment starts only after that inventory is frozen — every best practice gets exactly one status from a five-value vocabulary, and findings cite the code they came from.

Four modes are available: a full review covering every best practice with BP ID citations, a question-level quick review, a pillar-scoped pass, and a score mode that returns a maturity scorecard with per-pillar scores. Lens-specific reviews use lenses the skill discovers in the live docs.

The AWS MCP server's `aws___read_documentation` tool is the recommended way to fetch framework content. Without it, the same `docs.aws.amazon.com` pages are pulled over HTTPS with your web-fetch tool; with no documentation access at all, the skill falls back to internal knowledge and flags that the framework inventory could not be verified live. It is not meant for single-pillar deep-dives, learning WA concepts, ADRs, or migration readiness assessments.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-well-architected-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aws-well-architected-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-well-architected-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-well-architected-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws aws-well-architected-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-well-architected-review -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/core-skills/aws-well-architected-review
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill aws-well-architected-review -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/core-skills/aws-well-architected-review/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- review a workload against every AWS Well-Architected pillar
- catch gaps between code and best practices with BP ID citations
- get a maturity scorecard with per-pillar scores
- rank remediation work with an Eisenhower matrix
- run an architecture review through AWS Well-Architected lenses

## Example prompts
- run a Well-Architected review on the orders service, code lives in `services/orders`
- do a quick review at the question level
- score the workload and show per-pillar maturity

description: Performs a full AWS Well-Architected Framework review evaluating every framework question across all pillars discovered from the live AWS documentation by analyzing code, IaC, and configurations to produce evidence-backed findings with Eisenhower-prioritized remediation. Supports full reviews (every framework best practice with BP ID citations), quick reviews (question-level), pillar-scoped reviews, score-mode reviews (a maturity scorecard with per-pillar scores and filtered findings), and lens-specific reviews using lenses discovered from the live AWS documentation. Triggers on mentions of Well-Architected review, WA review, WAR, pillar assessment, architecture review across pillars, workload assessment, cloud readiness evaluation, or a Well-Architected score, grade, or scorecard request. Does not apply to single-pillar deep-dives, learning WA concepts, ADRs, or migration readiness assessments.

# Well-Architected Review

## Overview

Guides a systematic AWS Well-Architected Framework (WA Framework) review: discover the workload from code and IaC, acquire the live corpus inventory, evaluate every framework question and best practice against evidence, and deliver a risk-ranked, Eisenhower-prioritized report inline.

Framework content is fetched from the live AWS documentation at review time rather than embedded as a snapshot. The AWS MCP server's documentation reader (`aws___read_documentation`) is recommended for reliable retrieval; when it is unavailable, fetch the same `docs.aws.amazon.com` pages over HTTPS with the environment's web-fetch tool, and if no documentation access exists at all, proceed from internal knowledge and disclose that the framework inventory could not be verified live. Do not depend on any non-public or internal best-practice/WA-guidance MCP; those are unavailable in supported runtimes.

Detailed procedures live in reference files — read each one when its step says to:

- [Review modes](references/review-modes.md) — mode selection (full / quick / pillar-scoped / score), trigger phrases, score output format
- [Discovery procedure](references/discovery-procedure.md) — infrastructure and application architecture discovery
