A skill that turns questions about your data into reproducible scripts: locate the files, clean them, report metrics with honest uncertainty.

## What it does

The skill sets a working order for the agent. It starts by locating data with `fff_find` and `list_tree`, then checks shape: size, columns, types, missing values, duplicates, time ranges, obvious outliers. Next it restates your question as something measurable — which metric, which population, which period, what is being compared. Ambiguous definitions get a follow-up question instead of a guess.

For the actual work it uses whatever is already in the repository: pandas, polars, DuckDB, SQL, R, notebooks. No new stack gets pulled in. Every step belongs in a script or a notebook cell under the project, named after the question, not in a throwaway shell one-liner. Raw data stays read-only and derived tables go to a clearly named location; filters, joins and imputation are written down as comments.

Comparisons and experiments come back with effect size, a confidence interval or other uncertainty, sample sizes and the test that was used. The skill flags multiple comparisons, seasonality, and survivorship or selection bias. Models start from a baseline, use a proper train/validation split, pick a metric tied to the decision, and carry a note on leakage risks. Values are never invented — when the data cannot answer, the agent says which data would.

The skill declares `read_file`, `write_file`, `find_grep`, `fff_find`, `list_tree`, `run_command` and `file_stats`. Without file access and command execution it has nothing to run on.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill data-scientist -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/data-scientist/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/data-scientist/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill data-scientist -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/data-scientist/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill data-scientist -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/data-scientist/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install autohandai/code-cli data-scientist
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/data-scientist/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill data-scientist -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/autohandai/code-cli --path src/skills/builtin/data-scientist
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/data-scientist/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add autohandai/code-cli --skill data-scientist -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/autohandai/code-cli/tree/HEAD/src/skills/builtin/data-scientist/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compute a metric from a CSV without losing the assumptions
- check a table for duplicates and missing values
- read out an A/B test with effect size and confidence interval
- build a baseline model with a clean train/validation split
- turn a one-off analysis into a script you can rerun

## Example prompts
- Compute conversion from `events.csv` for March and tell me what data is missing
- Compare the two groups in `experiment.parquet`: effect size, interval, sample sizes
- Build a baseline model on `churn.csv` and flag where leakage could creep in

# Work like a data scientist

Answer questions with reproducible code and honest uncertainty, not with
numbers pulled from a single glance at a file.

## Understand before computing

1. Locate the data (`fff_find`, `list_tree`) and inspect its shape: size,
   columns, types, missing values, duplicates, time ranges, obvious outliers.
2. Restate the question as a measurable one: which metric, which population,
   which period, which comparison. Ask if the definition is ambiguous.
3. Pick the tool already present in the repository (pandas, polars, DuckDB,
   SQL, R, notebooks); do not introduce a stack the project does not use.

## Analyze reproducibly

- Put every step in a script or notebook cell under the project, never only in
  a shell one-liner. Name it after the question.
- Keep raw data read-only; write derived tables to a clearly named location.
- State assumptions inline (filters, joins, imputation) as comments.
- For comparisons and experiments report effect size, confidence interval or
  uncertainty, sample sizes, and the test used; flag multiple comparisons,
  seasonality, and survivorship or selection bias.
- For models: baseline first, proper train/validation split, a metric tied to
  the decision, and a note on leakage risks.

## Present

- Lead with the answer and its uncertainty in one sentence.
- One table or a small chart per finding; label units and periods.
- List caveats that could change the decision, then what to check next.

Never fabricate values. If the data cannot answer the question, say what data
would.
