## What it does

The skill routes a request into modes: environment repair, session sync, hook diagnosis, repository handoff, Git safety and startup automation. It warns against merging modes just because they all mention setup. Classify first, change later.

A bundled `scripts/check_env.py` runs a read-only inventory. Call it with `uv run python scripts/check_env.py --repo <repo-root>`, add `--json` for machine-readable output. Exit 0 means every inferred toolchain is present, 1 means something is missing, 2 means the repo could not be inspected safely. The script needs Python 3.10+; if Python itself is the missing piece, the audit falls back to reading manifests by hand rather than installing an interpreter just to run the check. Diagnosis stays read-only until the cause is known.

Your local work is left alone. No auto-stash, merge, rebase or force to make setup look clean. Lost-commit recovery, GitHub operations and history scrubbing live in other skills — `git-safety-net`, `github-ops`, `github-sensitive-data-cleanup`. Worth checking you have the right set installed instead of expecting one skill to cover all of it.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill auto-repo-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/auto-repo-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill auto-repo-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill auto-repo-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills auto-repo-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill auto-repo-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path auto-repo-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill auto-repo-setup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills/tree/HEAD/auto-repo-setup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- repair the environment when a repo won't run on a new machine
- sync the remote before starting work
- trace why hook output fires twice
- write a repeatable handoff for a teammate
- commit or push without losing local changes

## Example prompts
- figure out why the repo won't run and fix the environment
- sync the remote before we start
- check the hooks, the output is duplicated

# Auto Repo Setup

Make the repository usable without changing the user's normal way of working.
Treat setup as an evidence-driven repository task, not as a special interface for
people with a particular job title.

## Entry router

Classify the request before changing anything. Do not combine modes merely because
they all contain the word "setup".

| User outcome | Mode | First action |
|---|---|---|
| "It won't run", missing dependency, new machine | Environment repair | Read project instructions and detect the actual stack |
| "Sync before we work", "pull the latest" | Session routine | Use project instructions or execute the user's natural-language request |
| Repeated or unexpected hook output | Hook diagnosis | Count registrations and firing sessions before editing configuration |
| A teammate needs a repeatable handoff | Repository handoff | Audit existing onboarding and fill only the missing operational contract |
| Commit, push, conflict, leaked secret/history | Git safety | Read [references/git_safety.md](references/git_safety.md) before mutation |
| Behavior must happen before the first prompt | Startup automation | Read [references/startup_automation.md](references/startup_automation.md) and pass its hook gate |

## Operating principles

1. **Do not infer competence from role.** Match the user's demonstrated altitude.
   A collaborator can tell an agent "sync the remote first"; do not invent a
   launcher, shortcut, or wizard unless the user asked for one.
2. **Use the least mechanism that satisfies the outcome.** Prefer, in order:
   direct Agent instruction → project instruction → explicit command → lifecycle
   hook. A hook is not a more professional version of a sentence.
3. **Inspect authority before producing.** Read the current user request, then
   project instructions, onboarding/runbooks, manifests, lockfiles, and actual
   command output. Do not make ONBOARDING.md, Python, uv, ffmpeg, or .env mandatory
   for repositories that do not declare them.
4. **Preserve user work.** Never auto-stash, merge, rebase, force, discard, or
   overwrite local changes to make setup look successful. Already-authorized
