Walks you through choosing an auth lane for a web app or API and drawing the line between what the provider owns and what stays in your app.

## What it does

Reach for this skill when the real task is designing or refactoring sign-in for a product: hosted, framework-native, platform-native, an enterprise add-on, or self-hosted. It does not hand you JWT snippets. Instead it classifies the job first — app type, runtimes, login methods, session model — then recommends one primary lane and at most one fallback.

Supporting docs cover the decision matrix, a boundary checklist, session and deployment notes, and enterprise and migration notes. One step is explicitly about ownership: the provider usually handles sign-in methods, password reset, MFA and token issuance, while the app keeps local profiles, org membership, roles and billing-linked access. The shared edge is claims, webhooks, callback URLs, middleware and cookie config.

It stays out of neighbouring work. Authorization policy and permission inheritance are a separate design problem, and cookie flags, CSRF, rate limiting and general hardening belong to a security skill. The skill runs with `Bash`, `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Glob` and `Grep` against your project files.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill authentication-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/authentication-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill authentication-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill authentication-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akillness/jeo-skills authentication-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill authentication-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills --path .agent-skills/authentication-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akillness/jeo-skills --skill authentication-setup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akillness/jeo-skills/tree/HEAD/.agent-skills/authentication-setup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose between hosted, framework-native and self-hosted auth
- decide where sessions end and tokens begin
- add social login or passkeys to an existing app
- define which user and org data stays app-owned
- plan an SSO and SCIM rollout without breaking current sign-in

## Example prompts
- help me pick an auth setup for a new Next.js SaaS
- map out what the auth provider owns versus what my app owns
- I need to add organizations and invites on top of the current login

# Authentication Setup

Use this skill when the real job is **choosing and structuring product authentication for a real app**, not dumping JWT snippets or pretending authentication, authorization, security hardening, and docs are all the same task.

`authentication-setup` owns the setup layer for:
- choosing hosted vs framework-native vs platform-native vs enterprise add-on vs self-hosted auth
- deciding session/cookie vs token boundaries
- selecting login methods: email/password, magic links, social OAuth, passkeys
- defining what user/profile/org/membership data stays app-owned
- planning SSO/SCIM, domain mapping, and migration/cutover boundaries
- recording callback URLs, cookie domains, preview/staging drift, and rollout notes

Read these support docs before choosing the lane or handoff:
- [references/auth-decision-matrix.md](../authentication-setup--references/auth-decision-matrix.md)
- [references/boundary-checklist.md](../authentication-setup--references/boundary-checklist.md)
- [references/session-and-deployment-notes.md](../authentication-setup--references/session-and-deployment-notes.md)
- [references/enterprise-and-migration-notes.md](../authentication-setup--references/enterprise-and-migration-notes.md)

## When to use this skill
- Set up auth for a new web app, SaaS product, admin app, or API-backed product
- Decide between Clerk, Auth.js, Better Auth, Supabase Auth, Firebase Auth, Cognito, Keycloak, or similar paths
- Add or refactor sessions, cookies, refresh-token strategy, OAuth providers, or passkeys
- Define app-owned users, profiles, orgs, memberships, and role boundaries around an auth provider
- Add organizations, invites, enterprise SSO, SCIM, or domain verification as the next milestone
- Untangle auth boundaries across frontend routes, middleware, backend APIs, and database policy layers
