## What it does

Reach for this skill when a Honeydew model needs a per-row column that the source table does not carry: `net_price`, `customer_tier`, `order_month`. BI tools surface such an attribute as a dimension you can group and filter by. Aggregating across rows is a different job — that calls for a metric.

The expression follows the dialect of whichever warehouse is connected: Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery. Field references use the `entity.field` form, joins and subqueries stay out, and window functions are allowed. In the YAML, `entity`, `name`, `owner`, `datatype` and `sql` are required, with `owner` and `datatype` flagged as always set explicitly. Descriptions are written for a non-technical reader: why the attribute exists and which team owns the threshold or logic, not a restatement of the SQL.

Creation goes through `create_object` with `yaml_text`; updates go through `update_object` with an `object_key` found via `get_entity` or `search_model`. Keep the field order intact when updating, because objects are versioned in git and reordering produces noisy diffs. A successful call returns a `ui_url` that you show to the user. Check the workspace and branch first with `get_session_workspace_and_branch`, and spin up a branch through `create_workspace_branch` for development work. Once an attribute exists, the skill requires running the `validation` skill against it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill attribute-creation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/attribute-creation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/attribute-creation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill attribute-creation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/attribute-creation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill attribute-creation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/attribute-creation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins attribute-creation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/attribute-creation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill attribute-creation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --path skills/attribute-creation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/attribute-creation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honeydew-ai/honeydew-ai-coding-agents-plugins --skill attribute-creation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- add a reusable column the source table lacks
- write the SQL expression in the warehouse's own dialect
- keep threshold and bucketing logic in one governed definition
- update an attribute without reshuffling its YAML fields
- test an attribute's output right after creating it

## Example prompts
- Create a calculated attribute `net_price` on the `orders` entity with datatype number
- Check the current session context with `get_session_workspace_and_branch`
- Update `customer_tier` and change only the SQL expression

## Prerequisites

Before creating attributes, ensure you are on the correct workspace and branch. Use `get_session_workspace_and_branch` to check the current session context. For development work, create a branch with `create_workspace_branch` (the session switches automatically). See the `workspace-branch` skill for the full workspace/branch tool reference.

## Overview

A Honeydew **calculated attribute** is a virtual, per-row column defined on an entity — analogous to an expression in a SQL `SELECT` clause.
It is evaluated once per row, not aggregated. In BI tools it surfaces as a **dimension** users can group, filter, and slice by.

Use a calculated attribute when:

- You need a reusable, governed column that doesn't exist verbatim in the source table (e.g. `net_price`, `customer_tier`, `order_month`)
- The value should be consistent everywhere it's consumed, not recalculated ad-hoc in each dashboard
- You want to expose a clean, business-friendly label for a raw or encoded column

Do **not** use a calculated attribute for aggregations across rows — use a metric instead.

---

## Building the SQL Expression

### Core Rules

- **Use simple expressions** — easy to understand
- **Use the SQL dialect of the connected data warehouse** (Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery)
- **Use `entity.field` format** for all attribute/metric references
- **No joins or subqueries** — simple expressions only (window functions allowed)
- **Use fully qualified column names** — `orders.amount`, not just `amount`
- **Prefer ILIKE over LIKE** for case-insensitive matching

See [reference.md](reference.md) for: SQL functions, JSON/semi-structured data, geography, data types, full YAML schema, attribute types, time grain, and format strings.
