## What it does

This skill hands the agent a board reference for the Arduino Nano (A000005, ATmega328P at 16 MHz, 5 V) and its FTDI or CH340 clones. Three parts ship with it. `reference/board-hardware.md` holds a corrected pin map, the power tree and a symptom-to-fix table. `reference/recipes.md` collects working code: `platformio.ini`, `board.h`, non-blocking timing, EEPROM, ADC, interrupts, PROGMEM tables. `template/` is a project that compiles as-is, in two variants, with a scaffold script.

It earns its place when a sketch builds, uploads, and then misbehaves. Old-bootloader boards need `upload_speed = 57600`, not Optiboot's 115200 — pick wrong and the upload dies with `not in sync` or `stk500_recv`, which reads like a cable or driver fault. The real ceiling is 2 KB of SRAM, not the 30 KB of flash. String literals in `Serial.print`, `const` arrays and `String` copies all land there, and when heap meets stack you get corrupted variables with nothing printed to warn you.

Other traps the compiler waves through: `digitalWrite(A6)` builds fine, yet A6 and A7 only feed the ADC mux. D0 and D1 belong to the USB-serial chip, so treat them as taken. Attaching `Servo` claims Timer1 and kills `analogWrite()` on D9 and D10; `tone()` claims Timer2 and kills D3 and D11. Timer0 stays off-limits because `millis()` and the D5/D6 PWM live on it. In PlatformIO, `#include <Servo.h>` fails to compile until `arduino-libraries/Servo` is listed in `lib_deps`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill atmega328p-nano -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/atmega328p-nano/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill atmega328p-nano -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill atmega328p-nano -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alexex1993/mcu-skills atmega328p-nano
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill atmega328p-nano -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills --path skills/avr/atmega328p-nano
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill atmega328p-nano -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/avr/atmega328p-nano/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- diagnose a failed upload on a clone Nano
- fit a sketch into the 2 KB SRAM budget
- write a `platformio.ini` for the right bootloader
- explain why PWM on D9 stopped after attaching a servo
- check whether A6 and A7 can drive a digital signal

## Example prompts
- Write a `platformio.ini` for an Arduino Nano with the old bootloader
- My upload fails with `stk500_recv` — what is going on?
- Why did `analogWrite()` on D10 stop working after `Servo.attach()`?

description: Firmware development for the Arduino Nano (A000005, ATmega328P @ 16 MHz, 5 V) — its 30 KB usable flash, 2 KB SRAM, 1 KB EEPROM, 8-channel 10-bit ADC, six 8-bit PWM pins across three timers, UART shared with the USB-serial chip, I2C on A4/A5, SPI on D10–D13, sleep modes, and the Arduino AVR core + PlatformIO setup around them. Use when working on this board or any ATmega328P Nano clone (FTDI or CH340 USB): project setup, platformio.ini, old-vs-new bootloader uploads, pin mapping, A6/A7 restrictions, timer/Servo/tone conflicts, the 2 KB SRAM budget, analog references, powering from VIN, ICSP recovery, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# Arduino Nano (ATmega328P)

Board-specific firmware knowledge. The Nano is simple enough that every
failure mode is silent — the sketch compiles, uploads, runs, and does
something subtly wrong — so read the reference file rather than guessing.

- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the complete board reference: corrected pin
  map (the official manual's own tables contain errors), power tree, clock,
  memory map, connector/LED inventory **plus** a development guide (Part II:
  §8 toolchain, §10 peripheral cookbook, §11 gotchas, §12 flashing, §13
  symptom → cause → fix table).
- `reference/recipes.md` — copy-paste code: `platformio.ini`, `board.h`,
  non-blocking timing, serial + free RAM, EEPROM with update semantics, ADC
  and references, interrupts, the timer/PWM map, Servo vs `tone()`,
  power-down sleep, PROGMEM tables.
- `template/` — a **project that builds clean**, in two variants, plus a
  scaffold script. See `template/README.md`.
