## What it does

Most tool rendering means one hand-written component per tool call. This flips it: you ship a vocabulary, and either the model builds a tree from it through the `present` tool or your backend emits one as a message part. The `@assistant-ui/generative-ui` package carries 29 default components — cards, tables, charts, forms — plus converters that turn the same tree into Slack Block Kit or a Microsoft Teams Adaptive Card.

Setup is two commands: `npm install @assistant-ui/generative-ui zod` and `npx assistant-ui@latest add generative-ui`. Then enable the `"use generative"` compiler for your framework — `withAui` from `@assistant-ui/next` on Next, `aui()` from `@assistant-ui/vite` on Vite and TanStack Start. The directive exists because one file declares tools for both the browser and your server route: the compiler strips the browser-only halves from the server build and the schemas from the client build.

\`present` is a frontend tool, so it resolves in the browser. Skip `sendAutomaticallyWhen` and the UI paints while the conversation stops before the model says anything else. One more thing worth knowing: `present` and the `MessagePrimitive.GenerativeUI` primitive both take a JSON tree, but the shapes do not interchange. An unknown `_type` or component name that throws or silently renders nothing is the case this skill covers. For a widget tied to one tool call you already know about, use `tool-ui` instead.

## Requirements
- Works with: Slack

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill generative-ui -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/generative-ui/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill generative-ui -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill generative-ui -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills generative-ui
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill generative-ui -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/generative-ui
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill generative-ui -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills/tree/HEAD/assistant-ui/skills/generative-ui/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- let the model compose a dashboard instead of hand-writing one
- debug a tree that renders nothing on an unknown component name
- render one composition in the browser and in Slack
- post an Adaptive Card to Microsoft Teams from the same tree
- paint an A2UI surface over AG-UI

## Example prompts
- build a dashboard from this week's metrics with present
- why does a tree with an unknown _type render empty?
- post this card to Slack as a Block Kit message

name: generative-ui
description: "Lets the model compose interfaces at runtime from a component vocabulary instead of one hand-written component per tool, and covers every generative UI pattern in the framework. Use for the model-driven present tool: JSONGenerativeUI, defaultGenerativeUILibrary, and present({ display }) from @assistant-ui/generative-ui/react, registered through AuiConfig({ tools: Tools({ toolkit }) }). Also covers the backend-driven MessagePrimitive.GenerativeUI primitive and its component allowlist, the Slack Block Kit and Microsoft Teams Adaptive Card renderers and their action decoders, A2UI surfaces over AG-UI, and the third-party OpenUI integration. Route here when the model should design its own layout rather than fill one you wrote, when an unknown _type or component name throws or silently renders nothing, or when a generative UI tree needs to post to Slack or Teams or paint an A2UI surface. For a widget tied to one tool call you already know about, use tool-ui in the tools skill instead."

# assistant-ui Generative UI

**Always consult [assistant-ui.com/llms.txt](https://www.assistant-ui.com/llms.txt) for the latest API.**

Generative UI inverts the usual tool-rendering relationship. Instead of one hand-written component per tool call, you ship a vocabulary of components and let something assemble a tree from it: either the model, through the `present` tool, or your backend, through a message part or a LangGraph event. `@assistant-ui/generative-ui` ships a default vocabulary of 29 components (cards, facts, tables, charts, forms, controls) plus converters that turn the same tree into Slack Block Kit or a Microsoft Teams Adaptive Card, and one that turns an A2UI surface into it, so a composition built once can render in the browser and outside it.
