# assertion-quality

Reads tests you already have and reports how much their assertions actually verify, flagging green tests that check nothing meaningful.

## What it does

The skill goes through existing test files and sorts every assertion into a category: equality, exception, type, collection contents, negative checks, state changes. Then it reports which categories show up in each method and which do not. Whether the suite passes does not interest it.

A common find is a method that calls production code and stops at `Assert.IsNotNull(result)` or `expect(x).toBeDefined()`. Those get flagged, because a green run says little about correctness when the only check is the absence of `null`.

For each language it reads the `test-analysis-extensions` catalog plus the matching framework file. With no catalog present it falls back to the pinned framework and its own rules, and says the reference is missing: a thinner review that you should know about before trusting the numbers. Fixes and new cases are out of scope here, `code-testing` and `writing-mstest-tests` handle those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill assertion-quality -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/assertion-quality/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/assertion-quality/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill assertion-quality -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/assertion-quality/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill assertion-quality -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/assertion-quality/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills assertion-quality
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/assertion-quality/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill assertion-quality -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/assertion-quality
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/assertion-quality/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill assertion-quality -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- spot tests whose only check is a null or truthiness assertion
- separate real verification from a call that asserts nothing
- see which facets of behaviour no assertion touches
- get assertion-category metrics before shipping generated tests
- explain why a passing suite still feels untrustworthy

## Example prompts
- Review the assertion quality in my pytest suite, I think every test is just `assert result is not None`.
- Classify the assertions in my MSTest project and tell me which categories are missing.
- My Jest tests pass but I don't trust them. Check how deep and varied the assertions really are.

# Assertion Diversity Analysis

Analyze test code in any supported language to measure how varied and meaningful the assertions are. Produce a metrics report that reveals whether tests verify different facets of correctness — not just "output equals X" but also structure, exceptions, state transitions, side effects, and invariants.

> **Language-specific guidance**: Read the caller-provided or runtime-listed
> `test-analysis-extensions` catalog, then its matching language file
> (`dotnet.md`, `python.md`, `typescript.md`, `go.md`, etc.).
> `test-analysis-extensions` is reference-only; do not invoke it as a skill.
> If the bundle is absent, use the pinned framework and this skill's rules,
> report the missing reference, and do not search installation directories.

## Why Assertion Diversity Matters

Low assertion diversity signals shallow testing. Tests may pass while bugs hide in unasserted logic. Common symptoms:

| Problem | Symptom | Consequence |
|---------|---------|-------------|
| Trivial assertions | Test contains only `Assert.IsNotNull(result)` / `assert result is not None` / `expect(x).toBeDefined()` | Test passes but doesn't verify correctness |
| Single-value obsession | Always check one field or return value | Bugs in unasserted logic slip through |
| No negative assertions | Never check what shouldn't happen | Regressions sneak in through false positives |
| No state checks | Don't verify object state changes | Missed side-effects or lifecycle issues |
| No structural checks | Only assert top-level value | Bugs in nested objects go unnoticed |
| Assertion-free tests | Tests that call but don't verify | Code coverage lies; false security |

## When to Use

- User asks to evaluate assertion quality or depth
- User asks "are my tests actually testing anything meaningful?"
- User wants to know if test assertions are too shallow or trivial
- User asks for assertion coverage metrics or diversity analysis
- User suspects tests give false confidence despite passing
