## What it does

The skill lays out a `MyApp.ServiceDefaults` project built around `Extensions.cs`. One call to `AddServiceDefaults()` wires OpenTelemetry for logs, traces and metrics, registers a basic health check, turns on service discovery and applies the standard HTTP resilience handler. Every service in the solution calls that method from its `Program.cs`, so observability config lives in one file instead of being copied around.

\`ConfigureOpenTelemetry` drops requests to `/health` and `/alive` from traces, and the OTLP exporter is added only when `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT` is set. Set that variable before you expect any telemetry to leave the process. `MapDefaultEndpoints` publishes the two endpoints and does so only in the development environment.

The example project targets `net9.0` with `IsAspireSharedProject`, and pulls in the resilience, service discovery and OpenTelemetry packages. Worker hosts work too: `Host.CreateApplicationBuilder` accepts the same extension method.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-service-defaults -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/aspire-service-defaults/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-service-defaults -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-service-defaults -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills aspire-service-defaults
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-service-defaults -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --path skills/aspire-service-defaults
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills --skill aspire-service-defaults -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Aaronontheweb/dotnet-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/aspire-service-defaults/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up OpenTelemetry once for every Aspire service
- expose `/health` and `/alive` endpoints in each service
- apply retry and circuit breaker policies to outgoing HTTP calls
- resolve service names through service discovery
- keep health probe traffic out of traces

## Example prompts
- Create a `MyApp.ServiceDefaults` project and call `AddServiceDefaults()` in every service's `Program.cs`
- Add the OTLP exporter to ServiceDefaults using the address from `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT`
- Map `/health` and `/alive` with `MapDefaultEndpoints`, development environment only

# Aspire Service Defaults

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Building Aspire-based distributed applications
- Need consistent observability (logging, tracing, metrics) across services
- Want shared health check configuration
- Configuring HttpClient resilience and service discovery

---

## What is ServiceDefaults?

ServiceDefaults is a shared project that provides common configuration for all services in an Aspire application:

- **OpenTelemetry** - Logging, tracing, and metrics
- **Health Checks** - Readiness and liveness endpoints
- **Service Discovery** - Automatic service resolution
- **HTTP Resilience** - Retry and circuit breaker policies

Every service references this project and calls `AddServiceDefaults()`.

## Project Structure

```
src/
  MyApp.ServiceDefaults/
    Extensions.cs
    MyApp.ServiceDefaults.csproj
  MyApp.Api/
    Program.cs  # Calls AddServiceDefaults()
  MyApp.Worker/
    Program.cs  # Calls AddServiceDefaults()
  MyApp.AppHost/
    Program.cs
```
