## What it does

The skill asks questions that pull out concrete episodes instead of flattering labels. Three sets: what drives you (what you did even as a kid, which project made you lose track of time), anti-questions about what you dread, and outside-in questions handed to people who know you as homework. They build the perfect scenario where you kill it, and your personal hell.

Motives people rarely say out loud — money, fame, proving a point — are welcome here. Every finding goes into `WHO-ME.md` as a plain fact rather than a virtue or a flaw, with the contexts where it helps and where it hurts written next to it. The skill also works through what to do about a drain: route around it, budget a bounded dose of time for it, or train it up to adequate.

This is not for inventorying a company's or product's strengths, and not for distilling the one or two decisive personal advantages — that is the next step, which reads the finished file. Load it when you ask what work fits you, why you keep burning out, or what to build given who you are.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-who-me -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-who-me/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-who-me -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-who-me -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-who-me
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-who-me -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-who-me
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-who-me -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-who-me/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- figure out what work actually fits you
- understand why you keep burning out
- separate real strengths from rehearsed labels
- name motives you would rather not admit
- collect facts about yourself in one file with contexts

## Example prompts
- help me figure out who I actually am and what drives me
- why do I keep burning out — hit me with the anti-questions
- write questions for my friends about my perfect scenario and personal hell

Presses every self-flattering label into concrete episodes, welcomes socially unacceptable motives (money, fame, proving a point), and records each finding in WHO-ME.md as a non-judgmental fact — a strength in some contexts, a hindrance in others — with the contexts where it helps and hurts. Load when the user asks who they really are, what work fits them, what drives or drains them, why they keep burning out, or what to build given who they are. Do NOT load to inventory a company's or product's strengths or to distill the one or two decisive personal advantages — the voters step, which consumes this file."

# Who, Me? — Find Out Who You Actually Are

"Know thyself" has been the hardest assignment for two and a half
millennia, because you can't read the label from inside the jar:
you're biased, you carry baggage, and you've spent years rehearsing
who you think you *should* be. Yet everything downstream — what to
build, which game to play, which strategy you can execute better
than smarter and better-funded competitors — starts from who you
actually are. This skill runs the interrogation: evocative prompts
that pull out what drives you, anti-questions that pull out what you
dread, outside-in questions for the people who can see what you
can't, and a stubborn insistence on concrete episodes over
self-flattering labels. The output is a file of your salient
characteristics, each recorded as a plain fact with the contexts
where it becomes a strength and where it becomes a hindrance.

## The mental model

### Characteristics are facts, not virtues

"Competitive" — always wanting to win, specifically to beat other
people — is it a strength? Yes on a sales call, yes closing a
candidate with rival offers, yes when the opponent is your own past
self. No in a meeting whose goal is to help rather than to win the
argument, no when comparison drains the joy from hobbies. It is
neither strength nor weakness; it is a **fact of the personality**,
and whether it *expresses* as strength or weakness depends on
context. These facts shift rarely, and only with deliberate
investment — but you can select contexts where they express as
strengths. As Buffett put it, you beat Bobby Fischer by playing him
at anything but chess. The right strategy hinges on what you already
do exceptionally well and *want* to do for years, rather than on
