# asb-positioning

Turns headlines, ads and pitches into value-first language, promising more of what the buyer already counts. Useful when your copy sells saved time instead of growth.

## What it does

The skill takes one message at a time through three disciplines. First, more value instead of savings: "cut your ad spend in half" caps the price at a fraction of the savings, while "double your leads at the same cost per lead" prices against growth. Second, level fit: your own level gets features, one level up gets the promise, far-above levels get aspiration and never a promise. Third, specificity — no generic words, no clichés, real numbers only, and every claim has to pass the Opposite Test.

It also keeps the price story consistent with the declared strategy: More for More, More for Less, or Less for Less. Mechanism and deliverable claims aren't thrown out, they're demoted to features at your level. Survivors are recorded in `POSITIONING.md` as a reusable positioning-statement list.

It works without preparation, but runs sharper with an ideal-customer definition and a needs stack. Building those isn't its job — it consumes them, so they come from upstream steps. The cost exception is narrow and granted per reader: if someone reports that number upward and is paid on it, savings becomes their win rather than your discount.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-positioning -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-positioning/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-positioning -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-positioning -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-positioning
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-positioning -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-positioning
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-positioning -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-positioning/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- rewrite a headline from saving time to creating more value
- keep every claim consistent with the declared pricing strategy
- strip generic words and clichés from a product description
- audit a pitch against the Opposite Test and real numbers
- collect surviving statements into one positioning file

## Example prompts
- Rewrite this homepage headline: it sells saved time, I need it to promise growth in the metric my buyer tracks
- Audit this pitch for mechanism claims dressed up as value and lines that fail the Opposite Test
- Align these claims with a More for Less strategy and record the survivors in POSITIONING.md

Works one message at a time, recording survivors in POSITIONING.md. Sharper with an ideal-customer definition and a needs stack; works without. Load when the user wants marketing copy, positioning, headlines, or a pitch rewritten, sharpened, or audited. Do NOT load to build the needs stack or define the ideal customer — upstream steps this skill consumes."

# Positioning: More Value, Made Vivid

Changing the way you describe a product can justify a multiple of its
price — without changing the product. Most copy leaves that multiplier
on the table: it sells saving time or money instead of creating value,
mixes its price signals, and says it all in generic words nobody
pictures. This skill converts existing messages, one at a time,
through three disciplines — **more value** at the **right level** of
the customer's needs, one consistent **price story**, and every
sentence **vivid** — and records the survivors as a reusable
positioning-statement list.

## The mental model

### The repositioning multiplier

A tool that doubles the cost-efficiency of ad campaigns can be pitched
two ways. "Cut your ad spend in half" caps the price at a fraction of
the savings. "Double your leads at the same cost per lead" prices
against *growth*, and the same customer happily pays several times
more — faster growth is what their CEO celebrates; cost savings just
prompt "and how will we use that to grow?" For a business buyer it is
roughly ten times more valuable to grow faster than to save money.
Same product, same math, several times the price: the multiplier is
in the framing.

The rule: **never formulate the product as a way to save time, save
