## What it does

The skill walks the stack with you one level per exchange. It anchors the level your product satisfies, phrased as the customer's own goal in their own words. Then it goes down — the steps your product makes obsolete — and up, toward what the customer actually wants. Each level gets crystallized before the next one starts: specific wording, a true means-to-an-end link, named real-world occupants.

The result lands in `NEEDS-STACK.md`. Your level is marked, and every level carries a positioning role: what you do, what you promise, what you reference as aspiration, what you brag about obviating. The practical payoff is competitive. Vendors one level above you don't sell what you sell, so they aren't competitors — but they can remove your customer from your market entirely. Worth checking who you've been counting as an alternative.

It won't rewrite marketing copy from a finished stack; that's a separate positioning task that consumes `NEEDS-STACK.md`. A stack belongs to one kind of customer, the ideal one. When a sale has two heads — buyer and user — each may need their own.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-needs-stack -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-needs-stack/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-needs-stack -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-needs-stack -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-needs-stack
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-needs-stack -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-needs-stack
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-needs-stack -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-needs-stack/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pin down which level your product actually satisfies, in the customer's words
- spot real alternatives rather than just direct competitors
- phrase an honest promise one level above what you sell
- decide which customer steps you make obsolete and should brag about
- separate stacks for the buyer and the user when they differ

## Example prompts
- build our needs stack for the ideal customer
- what does our customer really want, and what level does our product operate at?
- who are our real alternatives, not just competitors? write it to NEEDS-STACK.md

# The Needs Stack: What Your Customer Actually Wants

Nobody's life ambition is to buy your product. Whatever your product
does, it is a means to an end — and that end is a means to a higher
end, and so on, up a ladder this method calls the **Needs Stack**.
Mapping the stack tells you who your real alternatives are (not just
your competitors), what outcome you may honestly promise, which steps
you should brag about making obsolete, and where your company's higher
purpose lives. This skill builds that map with the user: anchor the
level the product satisfies, walk down, then walk up — one level per
exchange, each level crystallized before the next.

## The mental model

### A worked stack

Charlie signs up for AWS to buy cloud infrastructure — servers,
storage, network. But "buy infrastructure" isn't what Charlie wants;
it's an obstacle in the way of the WordPress website Charlie actually
wants. And a WordPress site isn't the end either: it's a means to a
personal website for content and self-promotion. Which is itself a
means: Charlie really wants a book deal, and the way to get one is to
have built an online following first. Written as a stack, top ends
above bottom means:

- ★ Get a book deal.
- → Have a personal website for content and self-promotion.
- → Set up a WordPress website.
- → Buy infrastructure.

Every level is real, every level has vendors serving it (Substack and
