## What it does

This skill handles the third step of a customer-interview method: getting from a hypothesis to a question you can actually ask a person. It runs in two modes. Hand it one hypothesis and it keeps reshaping the draft until nothing in the wording points at a preferred answer, then prints the finished question in chat. Hand it a `HYPOTHESES.md` file and it walks the whole list, groups related hypotheses, and maintains a `QUESTIONS.md` numbered Q1, Q2 and mapped back to the H-numbers. That file is resumable, so you can stop and pick the work up later.

Four criteria drive every rewrite: the question must confirm or negate the hypothesis, avoid hinting at any one answer, pull out a specific fact rather than a sentiment, and leave room for follow-ups. There is also a structural rule — one question, one answer. Interview notes are taken one row per question, so a question carrying two asks breaks attribution and has to be split. The preferred shape is a clean main question plus optional follow-ups that drill into the same story.

Questions probe past behavior and current coping, not future intent about your product. Pricing is the one sanctioned exception: naming a concrete number is allowed, because the reaction to it is the data. The skill does not write goals or hypotheses, does not run or analyze interviews, and is not built for surveys or questionnaires.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-interview-questions -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/asb-interview-questions/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-interview-questions -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-interview-questions -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install asmartbear/asb-skills asb-interview-questions
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-interview-questions -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills --path .claude/skills/asb-interview-questions
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add asmartbear/asb-skills --skill asb-interview-questions -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/asmartbear/asb-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/asb-interview-questions/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- phrase a question from a hypothesis without telegraphing the answer
- rewrite a draft question that leads the witness
- turn a list of hypotheses into numbered questions mapped to their sources
- keep a `QUESTIONS.md` alive across sessions and resume where you stopped
- separate a past-behavior question from a future-intent question

## Example prompts
- Here's my hypothesis: customers worry their site will get hacked. Turn it into an interview question with no leading.
- Read `HYPOTHESES.md` and build the `QUESTIONS.md` with all the questions.
- Help me ask about price without the person just agreeing with me.

Do NOT load for writing goal questions or hypotheses (earlier steps), for conducting or analyzing the interviews themselves, for survey/questionnaire design, or for job interviews."

# Interview Questions: Test Your Hypotheses Without Leading the Witness

Most interviewers waste their customers' time and their own: they ask
questions that telegraph the hoped-for answer, collect a stack of polite
agreements, and walk away more confident and less correct than when they
started. Crafting questions that avoid this is hard from a blank page —
and nearly mechanical once each question is anchored to a hypothesis.
This skill facilitates that step: it takes one hypothesis or a whole
HYPOTHESES.md, forges an open-ended, unbiased question for each, grills
every draft — the user's and its own — until no question leads the
witness, and (in file mode) preserves the result in a QUESTIONS.md the
interviews can be run from.

## The mental model

### A question is a miniature experiment

Every interview question exists to test a specific hypothesis; one
question can cover a few closely related hypotheses. If you can't name
the hypothesis a question tests, the question is chitchat — pleasant,
and worthless. This anchoring is what makes question-writing easy: you
